Our friend Edward Sansom did it again. He just released an absolutely awesome music video for “Can’t Fight Them All”.
The song already completed its journey on the Indie Top 39 earlier this year and spent two consecutive weeks at the top spot. Even though the song can’t re-enter the chart, we wanted to go behind the scenes of shooting the video with Edward.
I am always looking forward to your new video, as I know it’s gonna be sick. Was it hard to come up with a concept for a new video after “Headlock” was visually such a stunner?
Ahh thanks, Dov, it means a lot to know people are looking forward to my videos! Firstly, I got to say that working with Max Rose-Fyne to direct this, means itás always going to turn out pretty epic. He’s a genius.
When I released the “Headlock” music video, I found people responded pretty positively and I wanted this video to go up a level. Focusing on creating wider angles, more dramatic scenery and a stronger story through the video.
I wanted the concept to be more empowering and more of a journey across the land. To confront your inner demons and bury them. To find power in yourself to put your anxieties and demons to rest.

When I record a song I’m able to see the visuals in my head so I don’t usually struggle too much on conceptual ideas. It’s more figuring out how to do it with a very limited budget that is challenging.
What was the inspiration behind the video and the song?
The main chorus lyric “Can’t Fight Them All” fell out when I was writing. I was obviously feeling low and in a hole and wanted to realise where I was and confront it.
It’s a song about putting yourself into training, like a boxer in a ring, to learn how to fight and control your own demons.

The initial idea for the video was that I was going to be a boxer in a ring and be taking punches. The lyric: “You’ve got me on the Ropes and I’m trying hard to beat you, you know”. I imagined myself losing a fight to myself in this lyric, almost like I’m getting beaten up by myself.
We didn’t end up going with this idea as it’s too literal and I wanted to create a bit more mystique and let the audience work it out and find their own meanings and interpretations. Find their own way.
The final video concept was to be on a journey to uncover your inner demons and bury them. To be a more badass character on a mission.
What was the biggest challenge during the shoot?
Digging with a shovel and not a spade. I was digging into the chalk ground in the woods with a shovel and we realised a bit late than to dig a hole easier you need a spade. We preferred the look of my mum’s shovel so had to go with that.
How much time did you have for the shoot?
We shot this video over a few days. I really wanted to work with Hugo Healy who does some brilliant aerial photography and the locations we found seemed to work really well. So we did a day with him jumping around different locations, running up and down hills, digging, and generally looking for James Bond’esque from high up.
Can you share more about the locations?
Then Max Rose-Fyne who helped direct this one and “Headlock”, filmed me in those locations focusing on creating the storyline. We shot everything in Sussex. So, Devils Dyke with the valley, Southwick fields with the crop fields and pylons, River Adur with the bridge and Stanmer Park for the thick woods.
You’ve been making one great video after another, what’s your secret?
Max Rose-Fyne. He is a fantastic filmmaker and we genuinely had such a laugh when we made these videos. To be honest, I think it’s understanding what is at the core of the song and making that into a piece of visual art.
What would you advise to those who want to make a video, but have no budget?
I’m super lucky to be able to work with my best mate on the last two videos. We always say it’s a collaborative effort and we both direct it. I guess you need to try and find someone that likes your music, has a camera and wants to collaborate.

What you got planned for 2019?
I’m feeling really good about some songs I have just written and Iám going into the studio to record them this summer. They are pretty damn exciting and I think you’re gonna get a kick from them. I’ve also got another single ready to release so stay tuned and you’ll see that dropping in the next few months. In Autumn, I’m going to be gigging in Brighton / London so keep an eye out for those.
