London-based four-piece indie rockers, Young Astronaut, recently released a stellar new track called ‘Hellions’, and we at Indie Top 39 have had it on repeat ever since it first graced our ears. Serving as the follow-up to ‘Hope’, and the second single they’ve unleashed from their upcoming EP, ‘Hellions’ is a superbly polished, incredibly rich, and undeniably catchy little tune.
At just over two minutes and thirty seconds long, the guys get straight down to business with thumping drums and an intense bassline. Vocalist Chris Boakes makes his introduction, and ‘Hellions’ slows down a little, before effortlessly building itself up in the most appealing and infectious way. This is a bold statement – but I believe Young Astronaut has crafted a specific and distinctive musical aura, both with ‘Hope’ and now ‘Hellions’, that will put them in excellent stead going forward. We can’t wait for their upcoming EP, ‘Pirouette & Fall’, and think it could be something truly rather special!
Rich and intense, layered and introspective, ‘Hellion’s is another cracking tune from one of London’s finest!
INDIE TOP 39
What does the song mean to you?
‘Hellions’ is definitely the rockiest and punchiest track from our upcoming EP Pirouette & Fall and a fun one to play live. It’s the earliest song that we wrote for the EP and it’s always felt really energetic. We added a lot of layers to the recording including a brass section so it’s great to listen back to the arrangement.
What are your favourite lyrics in the song?
Chris: “You pray to God and I pay the Goddamn price” is probably the angstiest lyric I’ve ever written. The whole concept of the song is about rejecting social expectations and ideals – it’s not anti-religious, just a part of the commentary.
Which Netflix series or movie would you like your music to be featured in?
Hmm that’s a tough one. I don’t know if it would fit but Fargo would be amazing!
What do you want to achieve in the next 12 months with your music?
We’re excited to release the final two tracks from the EP and promote it as heavily as possible. We’ve also got a lot of ideas for new music floating around – it would be great to work on fleshing those ideas out and working on full band arrangements.
