‘Cosmic Mess’ is the debut single from enigmatic artist Warahenege. Recorded in his bedroom in the wee hours as real-life Praveen Somarathne helped keep the country safe as a junior doctor working during the pandemic. I found that out after I’d already selected the track for review and there’s no denying that it makes this debut all the more impressive. This song is awash with glittering synths, retro-sounding, beautifully produced beats and that ghostly, lingering lead vocal that has been haunting me ever since (in a good way). ‘What cosmic mess am I in this time?’ is the first lyric to cascade out over the gentle, rumbling drums and its profound sentiment is given a tongue and cheek feel as Warahenege delivers it in a wonderfully laid-back fashion. What a gloriously enjoyable and definitive debut from this brand new artist.
