Last month, Stockholm-based indie-pop artist VOCAL LONER released one of the most magnificent covers of The Beatles’ ‘Eleanor Rigby’ we at Indie Top 39 have ever heard. Now, the talented young vocalist has unleashed ‘man on the moon’, the first of two self-written tracks. It’s a dreamy, alluring, and melodic little tune that the musician has described as essentially being about “a woman who falls more in love with the idea of a man than the man himself”. Putting her own twist on a classic love song, ‘man on the moon’ is also one of the very first songs that VOCAL LONER ever wrote, and that’s an incredibly exciting prospect when you think about it. Inspired by the likes of Orla Gartland, Simon & Garfunkel, Arctic Monkeys, and dodie, we wait with bated breath to hear the second original release from one of our new favourite artists!
‘man on the moon’ is easily one of the best debut singles we’ve heard! Dreamy and melodic, we see big things in VOCAL LONER’s future.
INDIE TOP 39
What does the song mean to you?
‘man on the moon’, to me, signifies a beginning. Not only because it’s my first original single, but also because it’s one of the first songs I ever wrote. I wanted to write a song based on something beyond myself – I’m not a very romantic person, so this felt fitting – I wanted to tell a story.
What are your favourite lyrics in the song?
“I would have done anything you wanted, through blood and tears, through muddy water. I planned a life based on lonely daydreams for you and me, eventually” The story i’m telling with this song is about a woman who falls more in love with the idea of a man than the man himself. While these lyrics are a little on the nose, I feel they convey very deep emotions that I think fit the song perfectly.
