At the end of January, we at Indie Top 39 fell seriously hard for Stockholm-based indie-pop artist VOCAL LONER’s first self-written track ‘man on the moon’. We said then that we couldn’t wait to hear the musician’s next offering – and now that ‘1976’ has been released – we haven’t been let down one bit!
Drawing on inspiration from the movie A Star Is Born, VOCAL LONER tells the story of a musician who falls in love with a girl at one of his shows. But then comes the downfall, and the subsequent breakdown of a toxic and destructive relationship. “This all ended years ago, he’s still high and she’s still low, he still downs countless before his shows, her heart was played like guitar chords.” Instrumentally, ‘1976’ is a laid-back, almost lo-fi tune. At least for its first half. But it builds up beautifully and effortlessly and before you know it, four minutes have passed you by just like that.
‘1976’ sees VOCAL LONER building and enhancing their sound. It’s an incredible tune from an artist we just can’t get enough of!
INDIE TOP 39
What does the song mean to you?
This song means a lot to me because it was a proof of concept that I could channel the fictional writing that I love into song writing. It’s a story about two people who found and loved each other at the wrong time, and their eventual downfall and turmoil.
What are your favourite lyrics in the song?
“They fell into this place of sorrow, They just can’t wait for tomorrow.” This is something I resonate a lot with when it comes to mental health – being stuck in a place that you can’t seem to get out of. Eventually, you just go on autopilot. It turns into “tomorrow will be better”, “i’ll just stick this day out”.
What do you want to achieve in the next 12 months with your music?
I long to release new music. I write a LOT, even though I have a little bit of trouble getting things together. I’m currently looking into producing more music for later release.
