Brooklyn-based duo Tropic wanted to end their summer off with a bang – so they dropped ‘So Good’ – and the rest is history! The banging, infectious, and upbeat tune has absolutely everything – rich and dreamy synths, hard-hitting drumbeats, and the silky smooth vocals of Jo-B Sebastian. There’s a disco-infused element as well to ‘So Good,’ as the pair show off their effortless ability to blend genres and sounds. Yet another product of the global pandemic and lockdown, ‘So Good’ has been described by the duo as, “a light-hearted reminder to let loose and enjoy life.” As the follow-up track to their previous hit ‘Control,’ Tropic look set to become something of an unstoppable force in the years to come, as their fan base continues to grow and their sound continues to evolve. We at Indie Top 39 are just glad to be along for the ride!
‘So Good’ is rich, infectious, and full of optimism. The perfect summer send-off tune!
What does the song mean to you?
We wanted to end the summer with a bang and our new track ‘So Good’ felt like the perfect fit. Infused with nostalgia and feel-good optimism, we wanted to throw it back with this disco-tinged track, something you could listen to while getting ready for a night out, something you could fall in love to, something that would be equally at home on a smokey dance floor or poolside – cocktail in hand. With so much uncertainty looming over our heads this past year we all need something to feel good about, and a dance party, even for one, might be just the thing.
Who do you hope the song resonates with the most?
We wrote this song in the middle of lockdown. The global pandemic has had a pretty universal effect on everyone. We were tired of feeling down, feeling trapped, and unsure of what tomorrow held, and I think the kind of music and the message of the songs we wrote during that period reflect that. Rather than wallow in our joint misery, we went the opposite direction. ‘So Good’ is that feel-good song we needed to keep our hope intact and our excitement for happier days afloat. We hope this song resonates with anyone struggling to keep optimistic, or anyone who just needs a reminder to not take life too seriously.
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be?
Our creative process has always been focused on collaboration. There’s a lot of back and forth whenever we’re creating. This particular track started with a beat Jarel (the producer half of our duo) came up with. It was infectious, it was funky, it had attitude, and Jo-B (the resident singer/songwriter) hopped on and added that lush chord progression. Once we had the basic outline of the song, Jo-B sat with it and came up with the melody and lyrics, and what proceeded was a tennis match of sending new versions of the track back and forth.
What does success mean to you?
Success is such a hard concept to distill into a short, concise answer. It’s so widely variable and the further along in your career the more the picture of success shifts and changes. At this point in our lives success would be finding and cultivating an audience that can resonate with our music, with our identities. An audience that can become our community, who we can support as much as they support us. In the end, we do this to touch peoples lives the way that our favourite artists have touched ours.
