‘Wanna Hear?’ is the excellent new single from London-based four-piece indie-rockers The U Club. As their first release of 2021, ‘Wanna Hear?’ is the follow-up to previous releases, ‘Dirty Laundry’ and ‘Found Someone,’ and continues in a similar melodic, catchy, and floaty fashion. A song that deals with the disconnection felt between two people who were once close, ‘Wanna Hear?’ tells a heartbreaking tale, but in the warmest and most comforting way. Standing at just over two and a half minutes long, The U Club have somehow managed to pack a serious punch and create a beautifully laid-back vibe in no time at all. A seriously impressive feat!
The band’s influences are wide-ranging and varied – The Strokes, Arcade Fire, Led Zeppelin, Big Thief to name just a few – and I can’t help but feel that this contributes to their incredibly unique and individualistic sound. We can’t wait to hear what they get up to next!
‘Wanna Hear?’ is a beautifully melodic and catchy little tune from a band that we’re falling pretty hard for!

What does the song mean to you?
‘Wanna Hear?’ is our third single and lockdown baby. It describes feeling disconnected from someone to who you once felt close to. The song moves through moments of desperation when trying to return to how things were, confusion in how to approach a relationship that once came naturally, and a final resignation of knowing things may never feel quite the same. With ‘Wanna Hear?’ we approach the theme with warmth – and we hope it’ll be received in the same light!
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be?
The original demo was written by Emma in the heart of lockdown when we found ourselves spending a lot of time reflecting on our own relationships – and becoming more aware of the varying degrees of connectedness we feel within them.
As soon as she started to put pen to paper, the lyrics seemed to fall into place very naturally, and the vocal melody was the most organic way to express the feeling we wanted to evoke.
We spent a couple of days at our home studio making some edits and having some fun with the instrumentals and the overall soundscape of the song together.
To wrap it up, Jack recorded the drums on tape at Resident Studios, and we finally did the mixing and mastering between our home studio in London and Chicago Way Studios in Barcelona.
What is your favourite part of the song?
The bridge is our favourite bit, and a perfect example of us wanting to match the energy of the instrumentals to the themes we touch on. The melody varies with each repetition, with the intention of building the feeling of desperation and confusion, but it’s the instrumentals and backing vocals that really carry you there.
What do you want to achieve in the next 12 months with your music?
Like most of the musicians we know, after two years of home isolation, we are itching to get back to the stages. We have been lining up a few live shows for the coming months and putting a lot of work into refining our live set to make sure this comeback is as special as possible!
In the longer term, we’ve got a set of demos written over lockdown which we’re quite excited to test out as a group. Now that we’ve established our sound over three singles, we’re finding it easier to experiment with it and draw from more unlikely influences, so spending some time in the studio in the next 12 months working on our first EP is definitely in the cards. It’s all happening!
