‘Breezy As’ is the brand new single (and first official release of any kind) from New Zealand-based singer/songwriter Tess Liautaud, and it’s a dreamy and melodic tune that we at Indie Top 39 just can’t get enough of! Described by Tess as “an ode to feeling lost but hopeful”, ‘Breezy As’ sees the musician embracing uncertainty, and finding the strength to carry on and keep going. “Bumping into myself with a scattered brain,” she sings. “Like chasing light paper planes on a breezy day.”
Recorded at Studio Sublime in Kurow, it’s hard to believe that this is in fact Liautaud’s debut release – as her performance showcases a comfortable, composed, and confident artist. Influenced by heavyweights like Bruce Springsteen, John Prine, and Joni Mitchell, Tess Liautaud has done what’s important and crafted her own unique and distinctive soundscape that will stand her in excellent stead going forward.
‘Breezy As’ is a beautifully dreamy and melodic debut release from an artist who deserves your immediate attention!
INDIE TOP 39
What does the song mean to you?
‘Breezy As’ is an ode to feeling lost but hopeful, knowing you need to rely on yourself and finding comfort in odd situations of life that feel clumsy and uncertain…scattered brain. Times of uncertainty build self-doubt but the song itself has a taste of joy through it, to carry on. The theme feels like carrying on through uncertainty, carrying yourself and it will be ‘Breezy As’. I wanted to make a song that had that uplifting feeling. A sort of little indie rock/pop anthem for life these days.
Who do you hope the song resonates with the most?
I hope this song will give a little warm balm in the uncertain climate we live in to those who don’t know what the next step is, that they don’t have to have it all figured out, and to not feel rushed. Sometimes little things get in the way and accumulate and start feeling heavier, and sometimes we have it in ourselves to figure that part out if we take the time.
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be?
The song was written in June 2020, right after the initial lockdown the whole world went through. There was a strange feeling of trying to step back into “normal” life as we knew it. I went away with a good friend by the seaside for a few days, to try and make sense of this sort of new freedom again, and one morning sitting by the sea with breakfast on the table by the van, the first few chords and melody came as I was strumming along with the waves, something airy and light. The process after was to bring it back home and actually write it.
I think a lot of those words already existed in my mind and on paper, as stand out lines, like I sometimes have, and part of the fears and hopes of this time of stand-still. The whole song was finished pretty quickly after that, I just remember sitting on the edge of my bed until it was finished, looking out my window to the mountain.
What are your favourite lyrics in the song?
Theres a few lyrics that showed for me as phrases I used for myself, as tiny revelations or affirmations even. But one that stands out and I remind myself of often is to be present especially when it’s too hard to project anything. “Don’t need to be anywhere else but here” is a reminder I tell myself. Especially when I’m living on the other side of the world in NZ, and feel like my life has been split in many sections from the places I left, and friends and family living on the other side of the world. It’s a reinforcement that I am right where I need to be.
