‘Chains’ is the first official release of any kind from New York-based singer/songwriter and up-and-coming pop superstar Sydney Gordon. At just nineteen years old, Gordon is ready to take the world by storm, and ‘Chains’ is an absolutely banging tune to do so with! The catchy, edgy, power-pop track will have you on your feet in no time, and the musician’s vocal range and texture are simply incredible. “The track was inspired by Fall in Line by Christina Aguilera and River by Bishop Briggs,” says Gordon, and it sees the artist getting deeply honest with herself about a particular romantic relationship. “I fed you little lies, they add up over time, I won’t pretend I’m innocent,” she sings. “And yeah I did the crime, it’s weighing on my mind, forgive me, I’m a sinner.” Trust us at Indie Top 39 when we say this is just the beginning for the unbelievably talented Sydney Gordon!
Infectious and powerful, honest and self-reflective, ‘Chains’ is an absolute cracker of a tune!

What does the song mean to you?
I wrote ‘Chains’ when I was in a situation where I knew I was putting the blame on someone else, but I was aware I was at fault too! This was me admitting that to this person and giving up the fight. As I always try to stick to my mind as much as possible, I can be stubborn, and sometimes you must admit to your wrongdoings, apologize and move on! In this record, I am putting aside my pride to fix something I cared about. I am basically saying you can blame me or punish me for how I have acted, but I am accepting my faults while also not expecting forgiveness.
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be?
I usually start writing songs at my piano but sometimes I’ll just be walking down the street and hear something in my head and I’ll do a quick voice memo. I remember I was just humming some melodies while getting ready to head into the studio and one just stuck. After I find a melody I usually just sing some random words out loud but “I’ve been wrong” kinda just stuck to me with the melody line and I became married to it. I did a quick voice memo and on the way there I just jotted down some sentences quick in my phone – little did I know that those sentences would turn into the hook.
What are your favourite lyrics in the song?
I think my favorite part of the song is definitely the verses, specifically the first BUT if I had to choose only a few lines from the ENTIRE song I would definitely say “I tore your heart out, I let it bleed out and…”
What does success mean to you?
Being happy and making others happy. The journey to finding yourself or channeling your passion is never easy or perfect, (even though sometimes that’s hard to swallow) but once you realize what makes you truly happy and you can reflect your happiness and positivity on others, I believe that’s what makes you successful.
