‘Two Flights Up’ is the dreamy, hazy new single from Essex-based musician Sam Masters, who goes under the moniker of Smotherly Love. It’s his first bit of new music since releasing his debut EP Predestinate Grooves, last year, and I think it’s fair to say – it was well worth the wait!
‘Two Flights Up’ is a cracking tune all-around, dripping with smooth synths, catchy basslines, and the ethereal vocals of both Masters and Laura Shaw (Kid Cupid), who hops on the track to add an extra layer of dreaminess and comfort. Unashamedly influenced by Australian psychedelic heavyweights like Tame Impala and Pond, Smotherly Love has not only expertly built on his previous work – he’s grown, matured, and improved his overall soundscape. If this is a sign of things to come, the future is spectacularly bright for this talented musician, and we at Indie Top 39 eagerly await his next release.
‘Two Flights Up’ is a warm, sonic hug. Comforting, rich, and in truth, just what the doctor ordered!

What does the song mean to you?
This song was written when I was stuck in a hotel in the Scottish highlands during the lockdown in the UK. It means a lot to finally have it finished and out in the world, as the moment it was written was a strange time, almost stasis, so it’s good to be back with some momentum!
When did you realise that music is what you wanted to do?
From a young age. I grew up with instruments around and music playing. It took longer to be bold enough to share it with the world though.
What does success mean to you?
Success to me is almost unquantifiable. If only a hand full of people hear my music and it resonates with them, then it’s worth it. Obviously, everyone strives for recognition, but you need to be doing it for yourself. To have a track finished and released and look back on it and feel proud of it is better than a million streams in my book.
Please finish the sentence – Music to me is…
A reason to bother I suppose. A reason to go to work, to spend all my free time writing hooks, lyrics, beats. A payoff for all the things you don’t want to do. For all of life that’s hard work. It’s the feeling you have when something resonates within you in a song, it’s worth it, for that small moment alone.
