‘Small Talk’ is the delicate and passionate new single from Central Asian-born, but now Toronto-based contemporary R&B musician SAYANA. Serving as her second official release, and follow-up to the emotional ‘Salty Water’, ‘Small Talk’ is an atmospheric and nostalgia-laced tune that showcases the luscious and sweet-sounding vocals of SAYANA. Lyrically, it sees the artist deal with an all-too-familiar tale – running into an ex when you’re not quite ready to do so just yet. “Is this how it’s gonna be every time I see you on the street?” she asks. “Our big love turns into small talk.” I think it’s fair to say… we’ve all been there!
SAYANA captures the moment expertly though and draws the listener in from the get-go, comforting them and sending out a reminder that you will get through it. We at Indie Top 39 can’t wait to hear what else this accomplished musician has up her sleeve!
‘Small Talk’ is filled with honesty, emotion, and passion. A cracking tune from a truly gifted artist.

What does the song mean to you?
‘Small Talk’ is about running into an ex when you’re not quite ready to see them yet. You avoid eye contact and make awkward conversation, all the while wondering how your once “big love” has turned into nothing but “small talk”.
The song wasn’t inspired by any particular person or event in my life but there was a point in my life, years ago, when I would wonder what it would be like to run into an ex. I wrote pieces of ‘Small Talk’ then, and it finally came together into a full song about a year ago.
Who do you hope the song resonates with the most and what do you hope to achieve with this song?
Everyone goes through breakups in their own way. While some people move on quickly, others spend months or even years avoiding their ex in fear that seeing them might bring up old feelings. I wanted to reach those people and help them feel like it’s okay to take your time getting over someone. There’s no timeline to follow, there’s no date by which you’re supposed to remain totally unfazed if you accidentally run into them on the street. You‘re not alone in feeling the way you do.
What are your favourite lyrics in the song?
“I go over things that you said in my head
Every secret you told me
Said you’ve never told no one
Bet there’s now someone else who knows”
