Piper Cole is a Canadian-based singer/songwriter and Folktronica artist who has just released her sublime, fully self-produced track, ‘Soul Eyes’. It’s a hauntingly beautiful and dreamy tune that sees the artist experimenting with new and interesting production and sound design. I guess, as a graduate of Berklee School of Music, this should come as no surprise. Oh, she’s also a classically trained soprano, just by the way!
Cole’s vocal performance is absolutely entrancing, with her sweet-sounding, nostalgia-filled, and soul-stirring voice. Drawing on influence from heavyweights like Kate Bush and Tori Amos, Cole also finds inspiration from electronic acts like LCD Soundsystem and Amason. It’s this marriage of influences that surely gives the songstress her incredibly unique and individual sound. Piper is preparing to release a string of more self-produced songs in the near future, and we at Indie Top 39 can’t wait to hear them!
‘Soul Eyes’ is a moving and hauntingly beautiful tune from one of the most talented musicians we’ve come across in a while!

What does the song mean to you?
‘Soul Eyes’ speaks to those moments in our life where we feel stuck and crave to live with more authenticity and aliveness. For me, that is a longing to be more real in relationships and a longing to connect with creativity. The question “what needs to die today for me to live a little bit more” was swimming around in my head when I was figuring out the lyrics. I work as a psychotherapist and my music is greatly influenced by the many people I have worked with on their journeys through pain, fear and disconnection and the striving to reach wholeness.
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be?
This is my first fully self-produced track so it’s also my debut as a music producer. It feels empowering as a female-identifying artist in a male-dominated industry. In the studio, I am experimental with effects and editing and enjoy sound design as part of the writing process. I am hugely inspired by experimental artists, such as Kate Bush and LCD Soundsystem, who combine acoustic sounds with electronic elements and push the boundaries of traditional folk singer-songwriter genres.
What do you want to achieve in the next 12 months with your music?
I have a few goals for my music. In particular, I am wanting to continue to hone my creative production skills. I am actually taking some mixing courses at Berklee Online as well. I find mixing to be another element of music creation so I find my production and mixing often go together. I want to get more single releases out including one more before the year is out. I am a bit too perfectionistic with my music. I have so many unfinished songs on my hard drive so I need to pick a couple and just call them done!
Please finish the sentence – Music to me is…
Therapy. And is intrinsic to my sense of self. For as long as I can remember I have been creating music in my head even before I knew how to play it or write it down. In the end, I had to realize that I am doing this to express what is inside and I need to stay true to that. Anything else would be false and probably burn out fast.
