‘Take What You Need’ is the brand new mellow single from Belgian-born, London-based indie singer/songwriter Nikki Roger, who’s better known to his fans as Pangolin People. The almost psychedelic and beautifully intimate track forms part of his upcoming album – and sees the musician getting experimental with interesting guitar effects and sweetly scattered synths. Roger’s invites his brother-in-law, Alexander from Geppetto & The Whales, to perform the vocals on ‘Take What You Need’, and it truly is a match made in heaven! Alexander’s hazy, dreamy voice just fits the music to perfection.
Pangolin People draws on inspiration from artists like La Chica, Alice Phoebe Lou, and Bon Iver to create his signature sound – and it’s a sound that we at Indie Top 39 believe should be heard by all! With his upcoming album scheduled for release in the Spring of 2022, it’s exciting to know that there’s so much more to come!
Mellow, floaty, intimate and exciting. ‘Take What You Need’ is simply a cracking tune all-around!

What does the song mean to you?
This song is about being content with the little things in life. The world is a gigantic place filled with small delights. Only take what you need.
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be?
‘Take What You Need’ was actually written in between what I thought were my best songs. The verses are built on only two chords, the chorus on three. This song eventually became my favourite up till now. It started out as a simple track but during the production, I experimented with different guitar sounds and loudly mixed drums, and I was really happy with the end results. I also decided to not sing the vocals myself. I never found the right sound. I knew my brother in law, Alexander from Geppetto & The Whales would be the perfect man for the job. His mellow voice just matches the vibe of the song perfectly.
When did you realise that music is what you wanted to do?
I discovered this deep passion for drums when I was 12. My cousin gave me his kit for a couple of months and I spent hours beating the thing in the basement. I convinced a couple of friends to form a band and the rest is history. I learned to play the guitar later on and started mixing my own work and that of others. My skill set is actually built on 18 years of playing and goofing around with different bands. And I never want to stop doing this!
What would your life be like without music?
I listen to music 24/7. The radio’s always on, in the car, in the kitchen, the bathroom, we wake up with music and I wear bluetooth headphones to work. I cannot imagine what it would be like to not hear music at least once a day. My soul would slowly wither away. Music is my atmosphere.
