Towards the end of last year, Irish-based singer/songwriter Padjo Dolan released ‘Hazel Eyes’, and we at Indie Top 39 were instantly hooked on the musician and his sound. Now he’s returned with another rather special tune in the form of ‘Rings of Saturn’, a rich, emotive, and anthemic track that softly builds its way up, layer upon layer, to a beautiful and moving crescendo. Dolan’s vocal performance, yet again, is truly top-notch, and his sincerity and passion shine through for all to hear.
As he did with his previous two singles, Dolan worked alongside a stellar cast of musicians and Grammy-award winning engineer, Ruadhri Cushnan, to craft ‘Rings of Saturn’ exactly as he’d envisioned. I think it’s fair to say – he succeeded! It truly is another incredible song from an artist who, with each release, just seems to get more and more confident in what he’s doing.

What does the song mean to you?
‘Rings of Saturn’ is a song about getting lost in the moment and finding yourself completely in the ‘zone’. It doesn’t often happen but when it does it is one of the best feelings you can have. I really discovered that feeling when I bought my first car as a teenager. Although the car was such a banger that bits of it would regularly fall off in motion, hitting the open road late at night and having the freedom to go wherever I wanted was a feeling I will never forget. I regularly found myself getting so lost in those nights that I could well have been in outer space and so the ‘Rings of Saturn’ was born. I think people should do what they love and get lost in the ‘zone’ more often.
Which Netflix series or movie would you like your music to be featured in?
I think Drive to Survive on Netflix would be a good fit for my music. I am a big fan of the motor world and reference driving and my cars in many of my songs. There is something special about listening to music when driving, it hits differently, almost cinematic.
What does success mean to you?
Success means a lot of things to me! Like any artist I would love to put together a stadium rock show and tour it around the world! But in terms of this solo project, I think if I could inspire just a few people to follow their dreams and take a leap of faith then the project would be a success.

An outlet to express my energy and emotions, from a listeners point of view more so than a writers. When you get hit with a catchy riff or a well constructed middle 8 section it stops you in your tracks and makes you glad to be alive. For example the sax solo in Springsteen’s ‘Radio Nowhere’, or the breakdown in John Mayer’s ‘Bigger than my body’. These are moments of pure ecstasy for the listener and are something that I endeavour to emulate in my own work.
