‘Wasting Daylight’ is the brand new tune from Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Olivia Morreale, also known as Princess Liv. It’s her first release of the year so far, and will feature on the musician’s forthcoming EP entitled Spring Cleaning. As for the tune itself, ‘Wasting Daylight’ is a dreamy, soulful, jazzy, poppy little number that showcases the softer, more delicate side of Morreale’s soundscape. Collaborating with friend and producer Jonny Sim, the track features a stirring live horn section, and the pair just create the cosiest, warmest, and most inviting atmosphere. A song about trying to find the right balance between important relationships and ones own goals and ambitions, ‘Wasting Daylight’ is simply a beautiful and introspective track. Influenced by jazz greats like Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and Ella Fitzgerald, Olivia Morreale has cleverly crafted a truly unique sound that we at Indie Top 39 absolutely love!

What does the song mean to you?
As someone who has been in many romantic relationships, I’ve had a lot of time to reflect on the balance between love, personal relationships, and my own ambitions and career goals. I wanted to find a lighthearted way to highlight the tension that can arise between these two forces. I was definitely lyrically inspired by tracks like Emily King’s ‘Distance’ while trying to put this dynamic into song. It’s an observation made with love, happiness and intent all at once.
What do you hope to achieve with this song?
This song represents at this point a fairly tangential part of my artistry, but one that definitely showcases a part of my songwriting that I love. It’s also a production collaboration with my friend Jonny Sim, who added so much of the production quality and many of the guitar melodies in the track. Along with the music video it feels like a delicate flower of a song – definitely not a workhorse single, but I feel like it lives in its own space and deserves a spot in the catalog. The lyrics aren’t too deep or involved, which makes it more of just a sculpture of guitar hooks and gentle thoughts.
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be?
The story of this song is actually hilarious to me. I wrote this song a couple years ago, and at the time I was seeing this awesome guy who was also a musician. Because of our unusual schedules as musicians we both had a lot of free time during the day, which can get challenging during times when one isn’t as busy. One of my favorite places in LA is this Korean spa called WiSpa – it’s open 24 hours and is a bath house where you get naked and hang out in various hot tubs in the men’s or women’s sections. My ex boyfriend got so into going there that it became an activity he did pretty much every other day, to the point that I had no choice but to write this song to let him know that as fun as it was, he was wasting so much daylight just lounging in the sauna that something needed to change. It’s a love song, but really a tough love song. And that is the actual reason this song exists.
What does success mean to you?
Knowing something about everything. I’ve always gravitated towards being a jack of all trades, and a lot of times it can be really discouraging because it feels as though everything is moving so slowly. But ultimately, my role as an independent artist is the CEO of the business that is the world I’m creating for my audience, and a successful CEO should have a working knowledge of each aspect of the business. I’ve been stressing recently because I am self-managed and therefore always have a ton on my plate when release time comes around – but then I realize that it’s not because I haven’t been approached but because I’m incredibly picky about who I choose to work with and what they bring to the table. Ultimately, my definition of success is in longevity – if this is what I’ve chosen to do with my life, I need to be able to do it for my whole life, and the learning thankfully doesn’t stop when milestones are reached or when I encounter failures.
