Brooklyn-based indie singer/songwriter, Nathaniel Paul, is certainly no newcomer to the scene. As a member of the Emmy Award-winning band The Bergamot, Paul recently released his sophomore solo album, with ‘Bitter Melody’ serving as the albums first single. The song itself is catchy-as-hell, with a sweet little guitar riff that guides the track along. Upbeat, melodic, and running for a little over two minutes, the musician has managed to pack a real punch in such a short time. “I think the idea in the studio was; what if Vampire Weekend had continued on their path,” says Paul. “And sat in a room with Jeff Tweedy (Wilco) to write.” The result… pure magic!
As previously mentioned, Paul is gearing up for the release of his sophomore album, Turpentine’, which he’ll unleash in the Spring of next year. We at Indie Top 39 wait with bated breath to hear it!
‘Bitter Melody’ is catchy-as-hell and just hits all the right notes! Another classic from the mind of Nathaniel Paul.

What does the song mean to you?
There is something strange going on in the world. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but it feels like a ‘Bitter Melody’. Sweet but surely strange.
What do you hope to achieve with this song?
World peace. Nah… I’m honestly just keeping the conversation going. I have at least 1-2 more records of music on my laptop at the moment. I am having fun with the process. I just released a full-length album, Learning to Listen, in the spring and this song continues that journey. I also wanted to keep writing about my time in NYC. I mean just looking out the window really gets your mind going. It’s a magical place.
Who do you hope the song resonates with the most?
I am going to take this one head-on. I think if you are a fan of Vampire Weekend, you will dig this track. I literally was listening to A Punk and some Wilco songs on repeat when I wrote this. I am a huge fan of both bands but I still remember how devastated I was when I heard Vampire Weekend broke up. I know they have been on and off since that announcement, but it hasn’t been the same since, for me at least.
What inspired you to share the song with the world?
My little brother. He listened to the song, which was a demo, and said it sounded great. I have been really blown away by the reception. I just wanted an upbeat track that you could tap your foot to. I put it all together in one long day session. I didn’t think it would go out – and here we are!
