‘Time Traveller’ is the first official release of any kind from Austrian-based duo Josef Umschaid and Lukas Wieser. Better known by their musical alias My Friend the Chimpanzee, the pair have produced a cracking debut tune that blends elements of indie pop, melodic rock, and even a little shoegaze for good measure.
Taking inspiration from H. G. Wells’s novel ‘The Time Machine’, ‘Time Traveller’ focuses on the human need for constant motion, and the duo contrast this idea with German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel’s theory of historical finality. It’s fair to say that My Friend the Chimpanzee get pretty philosophical and deep on the track, and it’s a sign of things to come, as every song on their upcoming album is inspired by literary work. If the rest of the album is as good as ‘Time Traveller,’ we at Indie Top 39 think the band could be onto something quite special!
‘Time Traveller’ is a beautifully pieced together debut tune from an extremely exciting new act.

What does the song mean to you?
The song means a lot to us in that it is the first piece of music we’ve released as My Friend The Chimpanzee. The philosophical topics touched upon in the lyrics, we think, are something that everybody has to deal with in a way, so it expresses a central theme of what living means to us.
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be?
Lukas: All songs start with me writing and recording synths and strings at my place. I only use analogue synths, because unlike software synths, you don’t have infinite options, which I find overwhelming. In a second step Josef builds drums around the recorded instrument tracks. On this basis, we write lyrics and vocal melodies.
What does success mean to you?
For us, we feel successful in our musical endeavors if we manage to create something that brings joy to somebody out there.
What would your life be like without music?
Less colorful, for sure. Music enriches the experience of life, like all forms of art (or good food, for that matter). To imagine a world without music is actually pretty horrible. To us, it is one of the most important ways of human interaction and communication.
