Sydney-based musician, artist, and fashion designer (the triple-threat) Mia Lovelock just released her brand new single called ‘Winter Comes’, and it’s a downtempo, chilled-out, and lusciously dreamy little tune. As someone who proudly shares an indigenous heritage with the Taungurung people of central Victoria, ‘Winter Comes’ sees Lovelock reflect on the past atrocities committed against her people. She also, importantly, shines a light on the beauty of healing, and working towards a more united and unified future.
Drawing on inspiration from acts like Massive Attack and Portishead, Lovelock has concocted her own fresh soundscape that is simply too inviting and appealing to ignore. Mellow drums, sweet-sounding guitars, synthy goodness, and the ethereal vocals of the musician are all on full display, and we at Indie Top 39 think it’s only a matter of time before this talented artist blows up!
Juxtaposed against the serious lyrical content is a dreamy, downtempo, and fragile little tune from a seriously gifted artist!

What does the song mean to you?
This song is so close to my heart and I am proud to bring it out into the world. It is a confronting and honest song about the fragile nature of sovereignty, the scars of stolen generations, and the beauty of healing. I have an indigenous heritage to the Taungurung people in Central Victoria, which is one of the areas of Australia where the past crimes took place. I believe it’s important to recognise the past, stand strong in the present, and work towards a future to unite.
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be?
‘Winter Comes’ was created in the studio laying down some guitars, synths and beats. It actually started as an uptempo tune, and something didn’t quite sit right. It took one night that my production partner and I were sitting around listening to some trip hop tunes from acts like Massive Attack and Portishead… and from then on I was inspired to bring the tempo right down. This really brought out the emotion in the song and it evolved from there.
What does success mean to you?
Living a life that I am attracted to and to enjoy the journey! It’s not about how much money I have or how famous I could possibly be. I find that I have to work on a daily basis trying to let go of the false belief that I need to be more. I believe it is so important to constantly recognise and be thankful for all the achievements in my life.
Please finish the sentence – Music to me is…
The ultimate way to fast track emotion into the soul and to stir it all around.
