‘With A Song’ is the incredibly beautiful new release from New York City-based indie singer/songwriter Mallaigh Ashton. Serving as the follow-up to her previous hit ‘Second Avenue’, ‘With A Song’ showcases a softer, dreamier, and more downtempo side of the artist. I’m not going to lie: it has a serious Mazzy Star ‘Fade Into You’ vibe, but importantly, Ashton manages to bring her own authenticity and individualism to the tune.
‘With A Song’ explores the thrills and anxieties of new love – and the ultimate joy of finding somebody who just gets you. “But you like my hazel eyes… you said you liked me from the moment that I spoke,” sings Mallaigh. “Well I like your perfect smile, I like your messy hair, I’d like to be with you anytime, anywhere.” A killer vocal performance is yet another standout of the track, and we at Indie Top 39 are beginning to fall pretty hard for this absurdly talented artist.
‘With A Song’ is one of the most dreamy and authentic tunes we’ve heard in a while! We thank you, Mallaigh Ashton!

What does the song mean to you?
This song is very important to me. It felt like a step in the right direction for finding my authentic, unique musical sound. And the lyrics took on a vulnerability that I haven’t shared before. I was very pleased with the production quality, lyrical structure, and overall sound, and I’m happy that others are enjoying it as well!
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be?
I wrote the majority of this song one night, recorded a little voice memo, and sent it to my producer asking what he thought about it. He immediately responded, saying that it should be my next single, and so I got to work on filling in the loose ends before it could go into production. From there, we remotely recorded the track (he lives in Atlanta, and I live in New York City), then he got to work on production, mixing, and mastering, and once it was finalized, I sent it for distribution!
What are your favourite lyrics in the song?
I like a lot of the lyrics because they’re mostly pretty conversational, and I think a lot of really great songs are written in a conversational tone. I would say, however, one of the more abstract lyrics is my favorite – “I rest my ear against your back/I like the silence and I like the lack.” I wanted this to describe the beat of a heart (the silence/lack), and I also wanted to flip the perspective of the singer onto the subject, and what she likes about him. The chorus describes things he likes about her, so I wanted to throw in some lyrics about the muse.
What do you want to achieve in the next 12 months with your music?
I would love to continue making music that feels authentic and unique to myself, while expanding my social creative circles. Since establishing my career in New York City, I’ve found that growing my creative circles has been the best part of my musical experience.
