‘Cold Space’ is the first official release of any kind from Toronto-based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Liz Dix. The indie-folk, indie-pop tune is a beautiful melting pot of sounds and styles, and the musician expertly juxtaposes the sombre, melancholic subject matter with an uplifting, comforting, and catchy soundscape. Wait until the horns kick in! Lyrically, Liz deals with the crushing realisation that a loving relationship is drifting and beginning to fade away. “Cold space, yeah I don’t feel your touch in the same way.” she sings. “We’ll circle round each other till we part ways.”
Drawing on inspiration from artists like Phoebe Bridgers, Maggie Rogers, Courtney Barnett, and Nathaniel Rateliff, Liz Dix has managed to sculpt her own unique sound that is intimate and inviting. If this is a sign of things to come, we at Indie Top 39 believe the future is incredibly bright for this talented songstress.
‘Cold Space’ is one of the debut releases of the year! Comforting, intimate, rich, beautiful.

What does the song mean to you?
Being my very first official release, ‘Cold Space’ holds a really special place in my heart. It’s a reflection of the space created in a relationship when two people start to drift away from each other, as well as from themselves. The song explores the moments when you realize you might be slipping away from someone you love, grasping at straws to make something work that has already started to fade away. It’s a vulnerable feeling to put music out into the world, especially a song like this which is so personal. At the same time, it was such a cathartic experience writing this and bringing it to life, and it’s an amazing feeling to finally have it out!
What inspired you to share the song with the world?
I’ve been writing music for so many years now, but something felt different about this one. It felt like I’d finally tapped into a style of writing and sound that felt like it was ready to be shared with people, and it’s such an exciting feeling to finally have it happen and to start the ball rolling with releasing music!
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be?
I wrote ‘Cold Space’ in January of 2021 over the span of a few days where I was having to isolate due to Covid. I was in a pretty low spot during that time, but the isolation allowed me to finally sit down alone with my guitar and reflect on a recent breakup I’d experienced. I wrote the lyrics and guitar part to ‘Cold Space’ pretty quickly, then was able to bring it to Mike Tompa who produced, mixed and mastered the track from Boathouse Studios in Ontario.
It was amazing working with Mike and seeing a song of mine brought to life like that. Up until then I’d only ever written songs with guitar, and having his help filling up the track and bringing it to life was incredible.
What would your life be like without music?
As corny as it sounds, I can’t remember a time in my life where music wasn’t involved. And I can’t imagine it ever not being there. Whether it was piano lessons, playing trumpet in jazz/concert bands, jamming with friends, or starting to play open-mics/small shows throughout University, music has always been there. Life really wouldn’t be the same without it! It’s allowed me to connect with so many people and has given me an outlet to process my emotions thought creativity, which I’m so grateful for.
