Tennessee-based indie-pop songstress, Kate Cosentino, recently released her brand new single ‘Prettiest Girl in the Room’, a self-love and upbeat anthem that explores acutely personal issues for the musician. Created as “an ode to those struggling with self-image”, Cosentino mixes heartfelt lyrics with a smooth, breezy little guitar, delicate keys, funky basslines, and just an overall optimism that’s hard not to love. “I’ve been the grade maker, I’ve been the game-changer, but I’ve never been the prettiest girl in the room,” she sings. The track serves as the follow-up to ‘The Match’, and you get the sense that Cosentino is brewing up a sound that is going to be rather unique and special. Drawing on inspiration from artists like Lianne La Havas, Maggie Rogers, and Orla Gartland, she’s beautifully crafted her own style and vibe, and we at Indie Top 39 simply can’t wait to hear what next she has in store!
‘Prettiest Girl in the Room’ beautifully and optimistically explores a heavy topic. We’re loving Kate Cosentino right now!
INDIE TOP 39
What does the song mean to you?
This song is for anyone who has ever felt like they could never be the prettiest girl in the room. It’s also for anyone who wishes people would see them beyond their external appearance. Growing up I always wore “bold” outfits (shoutout fingerless gloves & knee high converse) so that would be the first thing people noticed instead of my physical appearance. I always wanted to be the funny one or the smart one in the room because I felt I couldn’t possibly be the prettiest. This song is my journey of discovering my own beauty inside and out. I hope it helps you celebrate yours.
Who do you hope the song resonates with the most?
Anyone who has felt that they couldn’t be the prettiest girl in the room as well as anyone who wishes people would see them outside of their physical appearance. Growing up, I never saw myself as beautiful. I knew I was funny and wore fun stuff but never thought I could be physically attractive so I hid behind the other parts of myself. At first, this led to me harboring some jealousy or a superiority complex around women I saw as physically beautiful – thinking harmful things like “Well I’m probably smarter!” or “Her being beautiful means I can’t be beautiful because we look different.” This song is me coming to terms with those thoughts and maturing past them. Realizing we all struggle with the image we’re told we fit. I hope this song finds anyone who has felt either side of the spectrum and helps them see their beauty inside and out.
Which Netflix series or movie would you like your music to be featured in?
Sex Education has one of the best soundtracks ever. I would love to have a scene behind any of the characters. Especially Maeve or Eric. Love them! I know the outfits would be incredible as well. It’s the one show I watch weekly with my friends Martin and Kasey since we lived in LA so it holds a special place in my heart.
What do you want to achieve in the next 12 months with your music?
In the next 12 months I want to do a tour of some kind, either opening for someone like Lawrence, Chappell Roan or Orla Gartland or playing house shows and backyards! I love the intimacy of those shows; they’re magical. I would also like to get one song in a movie! Whether I’m a writer or the artist, I’m trying to get into that sync game!
