‘Soldier of the Modern Day’ is Jenny Colquitt’s first single since the release of her widely acclaimed debut album Something Beautiful, and all I can say is that it’s been well worth the wait. The tune is a melancholic and ambient one, starting off extremely gently, and effortlessly building its way up into a driving, layered, and powerful rock ballad. Jenny’s vocal performance follows a similar journey, as it goes from subtle, soft, and understated to forceful, gutsy, and full-hearted.
Drawing on inspiration from female heavyweights like Alanis Morisette, Amy Lee (Evanescence), and Alecia Beth Moore (better known as Pink), Jenny is concocting a unique and exciting sound of her own. The musician proudly admits that ‘Soldier of the Modern Day’ begins a new direction in her songwriting and production style, and we at Indie Top 39 cannot wait to hear what else she has up her sleeve!
‘Soldier of the Modern Day’ is a pure, authentic, and heartfelt tune that is just marvellous!

What does the song mean to you?
This is the first release since my debut album and marks a new chapter in my writing and production style. The song is sad in nature but builds to a driving ballad, representing a glimmer of hope and togetherness which voices my longing for tranquillity. The song to me means a great deal as it is an expression of my internal feelings toward the world in that humanity is by nature good and capable of peace.
What are your favourite lyrics in the song?
“This heart of mine is frozen inside.” It’s probably the saddest lyric in the track and the lyric that sparks imagery the most in my opinion. It represents the idea that the human heart has frozen over time to prevent itself from inevitable damage. It also represents that as time goes on, our hearts freeze to protect those more youthful and innocent. It follows the line, “don’t take my children, leave them all behind”.
What do you want to achieve in the next 12 months with your music?
I want to share my music with the world mainly through live showcases and gigs. I’m not releasing as much music this year as a solo performer to enable me to focus on touring and networking however this will be the first single from my next body of work. The aim is to release that next February. I’m always writing, I can’t stop at the minute!
Please finish the sentence – Music to me is…
The most powerful force that can change and shape emotion. I don’t believe there is anything more potent than shaping one’s emotion in such a short amount of time. Almost like magic.
