Philadelphia-based duo Hypothetical pair high energy with catchy and fun melodies on their newest release ‘Way Back Now’. Pushed along by an instrumental that is equal parts catchy and funky. Short punctuated verses border on rap and contrast the long tones in the chorus. The steady hi hat pushes the song along while keeping energy up. I loved how playful everything was. Every melody was memorable and enjoyable.
If I didn’t know better, I could be convinced this song was a major label release due to how complete everything felt. Every verse matched the energy set in the beginning, but was unique and added to the vibe. There was contrast between the increasingly high energy chorus’ and the breakdowns that would follow. No matter how thick or thin the texture was, something enjoyable was going on. Not only did it keep me attentive for the entirety, it also made the almost 3 minute long song fly by in an instant. Hypothetical sound incredible on this awesome new release.

Indie top 39
What do you hope to achieve with this song?
We wanted to broaden our fan base a little more with this one. It’s a pretty commercial indie pop tune, which isn’t a genre that we’ve really tapped into before. We hope people dig this one! It feels like it could be in a video game or TV show. It’s high energy and uptempo, which is something we’ve tried to focus on more. If you go on a run or go to the gym and play this song, then it should amp you up.
What would your life be like without music?
Can’t imagine it. Music is our safe haven. We feel that if we don’t continuously create it and witness it live, then there’s something missing. We do this for ourselves first and foremost. We create what we like to hear, and since our musical influences are vast, we feel like we can create something unique – a melting pot of sorts, full of different ideas.
What inspired you to share the song with the world?
We were itching to release a new Hypothetical song. We put out a full album last year during the pandemic, and it’s a cohesive project that we’re most proud of at this point. After leaning into that project, we were searching for the next wave of inspiration. We put out a Red Hot Chili Peppers cover of “Tear” which is a deep cut that only true fans will know back in March of this year. It was just time to put out new Hypothetical material. We’re super stoked on it and it seems to be resonating with people after these first couple weeks.
