Gully is a Bristol-based indie singer/songwriter, and last month, he released his third single of the year. ‘New Kicks’ is the fresh, upbeat, and oh-so danceable tune in question, and we at Indie Top 39 have fallen head over heels in love! Describing his music as “a mix of euphoric brass and big beats”, Gully effortlessly delivers the goods sonically. Lyrically, however, he takes a different, more optimistic approach than normal.
A song that is simply about “wanting to dance with someone so much that you’ll sacrifice your new shoes to do so”, the musician has only gone and created an absolute banger! “How do you do it? You’ve got my heart beating stupid”, sings Gully. “And I ain’t lying girl the truth is, it’s like a new type of music”. And it really is! ‘New Kicks’ is a wonderfully eclectic, free-spirited, and authentic track that will have you on your feet in no time.
Inventive, original, and ridiculously infectious, ‘New Kicks’ is just an absolute gem!
INDIE TOP 39
What does the song mean to you?
As a departure from my normally melancholic and sardonic approach to songwriting, ‘New Kicks’ is an unusual attempt at unadulterated levity for me. It is merely about wanting to dance with someone to the extent that material possessions or any sort of physical tethers like your new shoes cease to be of relevance. Stay dancing, all x
What do you hope to achieve with this song?
World domination. Failing that, a good, upbeat time for whoever chances upon it.
When did you realise that music is what you wanted to do?
I have perfect pitch and I grew up in a seaside city so from as early as I can remember, I would hear foghorns or ferry tannoy jingles and run and play them on the family piano. It’s sort of been an unwritten legacy ever since… that something so ingrained in my psyche and the way that I experience existence ought to be something I try and commit to.
What does success mean to you?
Success is a fickle thing, in my opinion. For me, it can range from hearing my song on the radio, to having somebody tell me that my music helped them through a dark time to simply getting out of bed in the morning. Each day sees a different definition. That is the best way to approach it.
