Galaxy Thief first caught our attention at Indie Top 39 when we heard ‘Free’, their first release featuring new lead-vocalist and frontman Rhys Messenger. We quickly fell in love with the tune and have been patiently awaiting a follow-up ever since. Well…our prayers were answered last month when the Southampton based four-piece unleashed ‘Timewaster’, a smashing, energetic, and classic indie-rock tune. You’re sucked in straight from the get-go, as the band showcase their tight and distinctive sound immediately. A song that, as its name suggests, speaks lyrically of the passage of time, and those who have unnecessarily squandered theirs. “Wasting your life while you’re watching us sail away,” belts out Messenger. “Stuck in a rut, you could’ve been something great.” It’s no surprise that Galaxy Thief continues to gain ground and stature in the industry, and if you get a chance to check them out live this summer, do it!
Yes! Simply, yes! ‘Timewaster’ is another killer tune from Galaxy Thief. Like its predecessor ‘Free’, we want to see it performed live.
INDIE TOP 39
What does the song mean to you?
‘Timewaster’ personifies the warning voice of time, holding up a mirror to a life recklessly frittered away. ‘Timewaster’ speaks to those who build their flimsy house of cards on sand – knowing it’ll never stand the test of time; that everything built has been squandered. It means a lot to us that this message is shared, especially following the last two years that our world has been forced to lockdown. Now it’s about realising the opportunities we have and grabbing them.
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be?
Last summer with our brand new role as ambassadors for Yamaha Music London and with lockdown due to be lifted, it was time to get back together and write tracks to be sent to our producer Michael Smith (RYP Recordings). The track had initially been mapped out by our bass player, Jake, in his bedroom. It didn’t take long for the rest of us to hear the potential and start to piece it together and make sure we all had a chance to bring something to the track! We all got together in the studio and wrote the lyrics and worked out how the track would be performed vocally. George developed his signature guitar riffs and Ben began to beat out the drums – both of which lift the track to new heights. It’s when we brought everything into the recording studio that it all properly came together, that’s when the magic begins to spark – when we lay the track down and production kicks in.
What are your favourite lyrics in the song?
‘the clock’s ticking, the sun’s still out’ or ‘aspirations, cast aside just like your dreams’. These lines are at the heart of what the song’s all about: regretting the abandonment of potential and ambition but remembering that the opportunity is still there to be taken if the protagonist will listen to the advice. This doesn’t apply to one single person but could apply to so many people we’ve all known in our lives who’ve given up on their passion and settled for less.
