Last year, Cardiff-based blues-rockers Fiasco released their smashing, no holds barred debut single ‘Animal’, and we’ve been patiently waiting to hear the outfit’s follow-up ever since. Well, our prayers were finally answered in the form of ‘Hey Man’, another scintillating, fiery, and unrestrained tune that gives us a glimpse into where Fiasco are going musically. Don’t get me wrong, there’s still the crunchy guitar work and pounding drums and bass, but there are also quieter moments of introspection that are both unexpected and beautifully crafted.
Lyrically, ‘Hey Man’ is a track that deals with themes of perseverance and determination, and serves as a reminder that, essentially, it is us who control our own destinies. We at Indie Top 39 are rather excited by the direction that Fiasco seem to be heading in, both musically and professionally. Their debut EP is scheduled for release early next year, and we simply can’t wait to hear it!

What does the song mean to you?
To us, ‘Hey Man’ is about perseverance – it is about not giving up on yourself, as well as reassuring and reminding yourself that you maintain control over your own life, written at a time when none of us had much control at all.
Who do you hope the song resonates with the most?
Anybody who needs a little pick me up once in a while as well as anyone who needs reminding that they are the captain of their own ship and as such, are always capable of working on any challenges that may face them.
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be.
So ‘Hey Man’ was actually something that we worked on for over a year. It took a long time to tweak the structure of the track to something that we were all happy with, and this tweaking continued right up until and during the recording session.
‘Hey Man’ began its life written on a 12-string – I was playing around in drop D and stumbled upon the intro riff which immediately felt super hard-hitting, especially in 5, so it just felt right straight away and I knew I had to build a song around it. I paired it up with some lyrics that I had sitting in my notes and they just seemed to have a jigsaw fit. You can actually hear the 12-string that it was written on in the recording if you listen closely.
What inspired you to share the song with the world?
It felt like it was finally time to record our debut EP. We’ve been playing since 2018, so there was a backlog of songs that we wanted to record and release. We all thought that ‘Hey Man’ would be a good single for the EP and that it would hopefully show people what we are about, as well as give them an idea of what they can expect from the debut EP. The EP titled I’d give it all to you will be released in early 2023, so stay tuned and if you like what you hear, catch us at one of the shows!
