Canadian-based indie-rockers Emblematics recently released the first single from their upcoming EP and if it’s a sign of things to come, we’re in for a treat! The tune in question is called ‘Festival Door’, and it’s a hazy, dream-pop little number with funky basslines, some beautiful vocal harmonies, a jangly electric guitar, and dripping with synthy goodness. It’s a seriously catchy track as well – and lives in your brain after just a couple of listens.
Emblematics draw inspiration from a wide variety of acts – the likes of Radiohead, Blur, Joy Division, and Grizzly Bear just to name a few – but it’s clear and evident that they’ve spent time perfecting and honing their own unique sound. It’s a sound that we at Indie Top 39 are pretty excited about if we’re being honest, and we can’t wait to hear the band’s upcoming EP which is scheduled for release late next month!
‘Festival Door’ is a beautifully hazy, dreamy, infectious, synth-driven tune from a super talented outfit!

What does the song mean to you?
The lyrics are intentionally vague, but for the most part, ’Festival Door’ is about the pointless, endless chasing that we tend to do in our daily lives. It’s a bit of a commentary on the rat race that a lot of us can get caught up in, and the anxieties that can be associated with it.
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be?
Mike: I tend to write songs in these long sessions where I record any random pieces of music that I can think of and attempt to make sense of it all later. ‘Festival Door’ came from one of these sessions (for the longest time, it was unlovingly known as ‘Song G’). I was also listening to random indie-pop playlists at the time ‘Festival Door’ was written, so I know that influenced the way it was arranged and recorded.
When did you realise that music is what you wanted to do?
Mike: I think back to when I was a teenager making a racket in the first band I ever played in. We were most likely terrible, but creating all that noise was so gratifying and that’s what made me realize how much I loved making music. When we started Emblematics and began writing our own material, it really cemented the idea that music can be such an amazing creative outlet. Writing and recording a song can be pure therapy for whatever you may be going through. And if you’re lucky, that song might resonate with someone else who listens to it.
What do you want to achieve in the next 12 months with your music?
Our new EP called Navigation will be released on April 22nd, so we hope it manages to find its way into some listeners’ ears out there. We’ll also have some live dates so that we can actually play some of these songs to an audience, assuming no more Covid waves. After that, we hope to write and record a new full-length album, maybe something a bit more experimental. Haha, and then we’ll see if we can get another interview with you in a year’s time.
