Indie singer/songwriter and producer, Ella Bee, recently shared her brand new single ‘Underwater’ with the world, and we at Indie Top 39 could not be happier that she did! Serving as the follow-up to her previous release ‘Artificial Heart’, which received high praise, ‘Underwater’ is a cracking, passionate, and catchy-as-hell tune that showcases just what this talented, London-based artist is all about. ‘Underwater’ starts off slowly, and gracefully builds its way up to a soaring, blistering chorus that sees Ella Bee display her incredible vocal prowess and control. Lyrically, the track explores how, at times, our goals and aspirations seem too far away to be obtained. “I’m drifting from the light, being pulled out by the tide,” she sings. “I am ready for the fight, I don’t just dream I fantasise.” Keep a close eye (and ear) on this truly gifted musician, because we think she’s onto something special!
‘Underwater’ is an intoxicating and infectious hit that takes you on a sonic journey from start to finish!
INDIE TOP 39
What does the song mean to you?
‘Underwater’ is my second self-produced single. Written during lockdown, it explores how sometimes goals seem impossible to reach, drifting further away from where you want to be but knowing that you’re ready to prove yourself as a confident, independent woman who can do anything she sets her mind to. It’s about letting go of things you believe are important to make space for better things to come.
Who do you hope the song resonates with the most?
Young women with big dreams who sometimes feel as though their goals are out of reach. The song is about believing in yourself and how sometimes you have to sacrifice things in life to make space for more important things to come. It’s about not letting people hold you back.
What do you want to achieve in the next 12 months with your music?
Just last week I hit a big milestone already, ‘Underwater’ was played on BBC Radio London and Jess Iszatt (BBC Introducing presenter) gave me a massive shoutout and said she is very excited to hear more from me! That aside, my biggest goal is to play festivals. I played Lovebox in 2016 and have been so keen to get back on one of those stages ever since. In the next 12 months I would like to start a new band and gig regularly. I would love to make it on to the BBC Introducing Stage at Reading Festival. I am also hoping to find management that believes in my vision.
What would your life be like without music?
Honestly I would hate to imagine my life without music, there isn’t really a plan B for me. I moved over from Australia with my family in 2013 to pursue my music career. I originally wanted to go to the Brit School but ended up choosing ELAM instead, which was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. After leaving that college I got thrown into the deep end of adulthood, not really knowing what to expect. I had to get a few hospitality jobs and after not being able to play live with my band anymore, music became a lot harder as I had to do everything on my own. There was a time when I felt like it was impossible and that maybe I should give up. But one day I completely snapped out of it and said no, I moved to this country to pursue this, it can’t be for nothing. I taught myself how to produce so I didn’t need to rely on other people to make music, I released 4 singles completely independently, organised my own solo gigs, and now I feel like I am finally at a stage where I feel like I am progressing. I am proud of where I am right now and I’m so excited for what’s to come. I love music, it’s in my blood and I will never give up on it.
