Ben Morris and Kayti Korte make up the Montana-based indie-pop duo Desperate Electric, and last month, they unleashed their glorious brand new single entitled ‘Karaoke’ on the world! Chronicling the beginning stages of the duo’s relationship, and Ben’s attempts to woo Kayti, ‘Karaoke’ is another beautiful example of a genre-blending track that we just can’t get enough of at Indie Top 39.
Their sound has been dubbed as “electro-soul”, and it’s a pretty spot-on description. Overall, ‘Karaoke’ is soulful, funky, warm, and even has a bit of an R&B vibe to it. You just have to hear it for yourself! It’ll come as no surprise to hear that the pair draw on inspiration from a wide variety of musicians and genres to create their infectious and uplifting soundscape, and having dug deeper into their discography, we’re starting to fall pretty hard for Desperate Electric.
‘Karaoke’ is filled with soul, warmth, and honesty. It’s a cracking tune from a duo who are worth keeping an eye (and an ear) on!
INDIE TOP 39
What does the song mean to you?
Ben: To me, this song really signifies an evolution – of a relationship and of our sound. Lyrically, this feels like chapter one of our story. Writing this song feels like anticipation turning into reality and reality is actually pretty good. So many of our influences came together to create this song, and I love how it turned out.
What do you hope to achieve with this song?
Ben: I hope to remind people of the positivity of love. I want this song to lift people up, accept vulnerability, raise spirits, and shake booties.
When did you realise that music is what you wanted to do?
Ben: I knew I wanted to be a musician at a very early age. I saw the unbridled joy that people can get from music, and I knew with certainty I wanted to be a part of that. Music transcends life, every soul deserves to feel larger than life. Music is a way that people can experience that collectively, and I hope this song can do that, however briefly.
What are your favourite lyrics in the song?
Ben: The last line of the first verse, ‘as I examine the link between all the time and the touch and the energy’. I love the way it describes being alive, and the life and positivity that people can give each other. I hope it implores people to reflect positively upon their relationships, and the desire to spread more love and happiness and sexy goofy dance moves.
