We at Indie Top 39 have been following the musical career of Hamburg-based singer/songwriter David Ost for quite some time now, and I think it’s fair to say that he hasn’t let us down once! His brand new release, ‘Woodlands Drive’, is an incredibly powerful and haunting tune that sees the musician recounting a deeply personal story of watching someone close battle alcohol addiction. “When you’re all numb cause you had a drink, you’re playing games you don’t wanna win,” sings Ost. “But every time somehow make it alive.. through woodlands drive”. Once again, David’s tender and warm vocal performance, along with his exceptional range, are absolute standouts of the tune. Drawing on a wide range of influences – the likes of John Mayer, Incubus, Nas, The Roots, and Sam Fender to name a few – David Ost has been able to brew up his own distinctive sound that just sets him apart from others, and makes him a standout musician in our eyes!
David Ost does it again on ‘Woodlands Drive’! A hauntingly beautiful track that showcases as genuine a musician as you could ever wish to hear.

What does the song mean to you?
It’s a very personal story. A tale about watching someone close’s fight with alcoholism. It’s also very much connected to my time in Glasgow – a place where drinking is very much part of the culture. It will always remind me of the people who somehow make it possible for me to do what I’m doing. The entire creation process of the production means a whole lot to me because there were so many people involved. So many lovely people believed in this piece of music! I’ve been able to connect with so many people only because of this tune! That means a lot.
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be?
I wrote this song on an acoustic guitar in an Open D tuning, which I love. When I showed it to my then vocal coach Elena Marie Malischek, she played the piano to it which created a completely new feel for it. Throughout the production process I realised there was something else to it and that I need to kill the acoustic lead guitar for there to be a main version & an acoustic version (which will come out in a bit). I was listening to Cy’s ‘my name next to yours’ the other day and immediately loved the tune’s soundscape. I just reached out to Cy and asked who mixed/mastered it. I still can’t believe she even answered me. Gustav Brunn is the guy’s name and he then actually answered me as well and eventually mixed and mastered this song. Yes to amazing collaboration!
What do you want to achieve in the next 12 months with your music?
2022 shall be the year my debut EP comes out. I want my music to be heard internationally and to make people feel something. I want people to take my songs and pour them into their lives in a way that makes sense for them and gives them something. It would be absolutely lush to be touring this year and to play these songs to people.
