‘Coming Home’ is the delicately beautiful brand new release from Brighton-based singer/songwriter Darcey Hope, and serves as the follow-up to her well-received debut single ‘Hold On’. The dreamy, floaty, and enchanting little tune sees the musician opening up her heart about feelings of loneliness and homesickness, and missing the warmth and comfort that your true home brings. “I try making friends with birds and bees on the beach, I just wish that you were sat here with me,” sings Hope. “But I’m coming home tomorrow.”
The songstress draws on inspiration from the likes of The Staves, Kacey Musgraves, Lana Del Rey, and Carole King – an eclectic mix of artists that have no doubt helped Hope in creating her own individual and distinctive sound. With plans to release her debut EP next year, we at Indie Top 39 can’t wait to hear what else Darcey Hope has to offer.
‘Coming Home’ wraps you up in a warm winter blanket and holds you ever so tightly.

What does the song mean to you?
In its rawest form, the song is a love letter to my hometown, and the feelings of warmth and familiarity I was craving at a time I was at my loneliest. I use songwriting as a kind of diary to process my emotions and experiences, something that comes across very strongly in ‘Coming Home’. When I was writing the song I’d just moved to Brighton on my own, which was hard at first.
The song holds a very bittersweet tone, as it creates those feelings of warmth through the sweet melody and floaty arrangement, but the meaning underneath the lyrics is quite sad in a way. I love this song so much and am so glad it’s now out in the world.
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be?
I love going down to the beach to write lyrics. The day I wrote the song I was actually going home the next day, which sparked inspiration for the central idea “I’m coming home tomorrow”. All the lyrics in the song are things I was observing and feeling whilst I wrote, however with the sensory lyrics I wanted to keep it unspecific to Brighton (where I wrote it), so anyone could listen and think of a location that resonates with them.
I wrote the song on the piano, which at the time was something I rarely did, but I now love writing on keys. We recorded the whole song remotely, something I had to get used to with the pandemic, but my producer Gary and I got into a great flow of him understanding my vision for the song, and being great at describing things over text!
Who do you hope the song resonates with the most?
I hope the song finds people who themselves are feeling lonely or homesick, and craving a taste of home. Especially as Christmas is approaching, it’s a difficult time of year for lots of people, with no mention of the tough (nearly) 2 years we’ve had globally. I hope people can listen and think of somewhere they call home, and somewhere that makes them smile. It’s been hitting lots of cosy, holiday playlists, which is the exact hope I had, and hope it continues over December!
Which Netflix series or movie would you like your music to be featured in?
Definitely something with a Gilmore Girls feel. If they ever do a second reboot I’d love a song to feature on the show as it’s a very big non-musical influence of mine! Especially with ‘Coming Home’, I see a sequence of Rory Gilmore travelling home in my head. It’s definitely a look out the window longingly while listening type of tune!
