‘picturesque’ is the second official release from Philadelphia-based indie-pop musician danny beau, and follows hot on the heels of his previous single ’21&WILD’. Shining a light on the toxic social media culture of today, ‘picturesque’ sees the artist looking inwards and trying to break free from the shackles of social media. “Keep me in, crop her out, only pretty when I smooth my skin, looking out for the perfect light.” The track, like ’21&WILD’, was written, produced, and recorded in beau’s bedroom, and showcases the musician’s incredible ability to effortlessly blends elements of indie-pop with upbeat, fuzzy rock. Drawing inspiration from a wide variety of acts – Conan Gray, Olivia Rodrigo, Maude Latour, and Addison Grace to name a few – danny beau has concocted his own fresh and unique sound, and we at Indie Top 39 can’t wait to hear what he offers up next!
‘picturesque’ is an infectious, uptempo, dance-the-pain-away sort of track – but it also contains an important message.
INDIE TOP 39
What does the song mean to you?
I wrote this song at a time of tremendous insecurity, when I felt anxious every time I scrolled through Instagram. Instead of feeling helpless, I decided to dance away my feelings by creating this angry, uptempo pop song. This song explains how I became self-aware of the toxic social media culture I take place in.
Who do you hope the song resonates with the most?
I hope this song reaches young adults, like myself, who also feel trapped by social media. I think it is important for all of us to focus on enjoying our real lives instead of worrying about how they look from the outside. Obviously, I still have a lot of work to do on myself, but I hope this song can inspire people to do the same.
What are your favourite lyrics in the song?
“I don’t know them, why do I pretend that my life is picturesque?”
I only say the word “picturesque” once in the song, but when I wrote that line, I immediately knew it had to be the title. I was so proud of that line because it perfectly sums up the message of the song: why am I so conscious of how I look on social media to impress people I don’t actually know?
What do you want to achieve in the next 12 months with your music?
I am really looking forward to establishing myself as a well-known artist in the indie-pop genre. I hope that with every single release I can reach a new set of fans and continue to grow my platform. By this summer, I hope to have completed my debut EP.
