Philadelphia-based indie-pop artist, danny beau, first graced our playlists when he released his single ‘picturesque’ back in November of last year. We at Indie Top 39 instantly fell in love with his sound and were over the moon when he recently put out his brand new tune called ‘golden age’. A euphoric and dreamy electro-pop song, ‘golden age’ expertly captures the fear and anxiety that can overcome anybody who’s about to “enter the real world” so to speak. At just 21 years of age, beau reminisces of simpler times, as his immediate reality begins to dawn on him. “Can we go back to easier days? Playing in grass and drinking Kool-aid,” he sings. “Singing ‘Down by the Bay’, every day’s a holiday, so if now is supposed to be my golden age… it’s way too late.” beau is working towards the release of his debut EP, and we simply can’t wait to hear what else this gifted musician has up his sleeve.
danny beau has discovered the formula to crafting perfect indie-pop tunes, and ‘golden age’ is just another prime example!

What does the song mean to you?
I wrote the chorus of this song in my freshman dorm room when I was only 18-years-old. Initially, the lyrics “can we go back to easier days?” were in reference to my difficulty adjusting to life in college. Now, at 21-years-old with graduation right around the corner, these lyrics have taken on a completely new meaning. Capturing the fear and uncertainty of being a twenty-something about to enter the real world, ‘golden age’ reflects on my tremendous upcoming responsibilities and reminisces about my childhood.
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be?
Last summer, I was scrolling through Instagram and saw graduation photos from people who were only one year older than me; hence the lyric, “can’t wait to scroll past the grad caps in the air this year.” I wrote this slow, moody verse with only electric piano about feeling unprepared to move on to the phase of my life, but I struggled to come up with a strong chorus. That’s when I rediscovered the chorus I wrote freshman year, “Can we go back to easier days? Playing in grass and drinking Kool-aid…” It was so catchy, and those lyrics were exactly what I was trying to say. When I blended the two ideas together, I ended up with ‘golden age’.
What inspired you to share the song with the world?
I wanted to share this song with the world so that I can look back in the future and remember exactly what I was going through. I love this song so much that I’ve decided to name my forthcoming EP ‘golden age’, which should be expected around the summertime.
What are your favourite lyrics in the song?
“Only dreaming about the last two days, suffer through the first five for fifty-two weeks of the years of my life.” It sounds dramatic and almost ridiculous, but when you have your whole life ahead of you, it is terrifying to imagine being stuck in a 9 to 5 job that you don’t like (only having the weekends to look forward to). I am most proud of the internal rhyme scheme and flow of syllables in this line, which I pay very close attention to when I am writing.
