Los Angeles-based indie-pop singer/songwriter Boyu had a rather busy 2021 with a string of highly successful releases, and he’s started the new year off in a similar fashion. His most recent release, ‘Embers Of Our Innocence’, is a silky-smooth, nostalgia-filled little number that takes you away on a dreamy voyage. Lyrically, the track sees Boyu exploring the mixed feelings that arise when we experience that formidable rush of nostalgia for the days of our youth. “We could’ve spent our summers chasing the sunlight, and your eyes ran wild,” he sings. “As the embers of our innocence fades into space, we’re ageing away.” Not just a talented songwriter and artist, Boyu also proves that he is a supremely confident and top-notch storyteller too. Drawing on inspiration from the likes of Dominic Fike, Jeremy Zucker, and Blackbear, Boyu has created his own fresh and exciting sound, and we at Indie Top 39 can’t wait to hear what he does next!
‘Embers Of Our Innocence’ is a lush, silky-smooth, and dreamy little indie-pop number from an artist who we’re loving at the moment.
INDIE TOP 39
What does the song mean to you?
This smooth alternative-indie-pop record was inspired by past faltered relationships that hinged on the temporality of modern dating and seemingly infinite options. The song explores the tension between sadness and hopefulness derived from feeling an overwhelming rush of nostalgia for our youth and innocence.
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be?
I wrote this song in my Boston apartment during lockdown January of 2021. Inspired by the love ballads by Halsey, UMI, and Daniel Caesar, I wanted to emulate the emotional vulnerability these artists brought into their craft. In March of 2021 I drove down to New York City to produce this with my frequent collaborator Zenii. We refined the song several times and finished the final mix and sent it off to mastering October 2021 for an early 2022 release. I’m ecstatic that ‘Embers’ is out in the world and it’s been so well received by listeners.
When did you realise that music is what you wanted to do?
I’ve been making music since 14 – I always found it fun to tell stories via song and make my tunes catchy enough where it would get stuck in peoples heads. Throughout the years, I transitioned from rap and hip-hop to pop and indie-pop as it was more fun to create pop records that people could play in all occasions. It wasn’t until last year, when I’d show my friends my unreleased music and all of them said the same thing, something along the lines of “I can hear your song on the radio” or “This is so good I want to share this with my friends. When are you releasing it?” when I decided to seriously pursue music professionally.
Which Netflix series or movie would you like your music to be featured in?
Euphoria is a big one for me right now (even though that’s HBO). I don’t watch many shows in my free time but I think any romcom or romantic movie/series that hints nostalgia or young love would be fitting for ‘Embers of Our Innocence’. The majority of my music is about love so in a sense my songs could be used in a variety of scenes as love is prevalent in all shows or movies.
