‘Play Her’ is the feel-good and catchy new tune from singer/songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Benjamino. Hailing from the sunny shores of Wollongong in New South Wales, the musician has produced what is arguably his most upbeat, funky, and action-packed tune to date. A beautiful, eclectic mix of genres, styles, and sounds, ‘Play Her’ is truly one of the most genre-bending tracks I’ve heard in a while – and you know how we at Indie Top 39 feel about good, experimental songs! Telling the “possibly” fictional story of the songwriter’s mysterious neighbour, ‘Play Her’ is the ultimate underdog tale that the world needs right now.
The song follows hot on the heels of Benjamino’s previous single ‘Golden Age’, which was featured on ABC Radio as well as MTV! We get the feeling that Benjamino is here for the long haul, and that’s an incredibly exciting prospect to look forward to.
Infectious, soulful, funky, upbeat… I could go on and on. ‘Play Her’ is perfect in every way!

What does the song mean to you?
Firstly, the song is really fun to listen to. There’s an upbeat piano part, catchy horn lines and the drums go pretty crazy at the end so it’s very joyful. Lyrically though it’s a story about a downtrodden woman who overcomes her circumstance, so writing that story was equally enjoyable.
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be?
I wrote ‘Play Her’ on my parent’s piano while waiting for a student to show up for a lesson. I had been teaching someone ‘Part of Your World’ from the Little Mermaid and I think some of that chord progression influenced this one. I wrote the lyrics a bit after that when my partner and I were coming up with theories about the mysterious old lady across the road. We agreed that she’s a drug dealer of some kind and being elderly is the perfect disguise.
Which Netflix series or movie would you like your music to be featured in?
I think ‘Play Her’ would fit really well in The Great. It’s a show about a woman who ascends to the Russian throne by outwitting her husband and his advisors – so I think my song fits that description.
What would your life be like without music?
My life would be very dull without music. I’m a sport fanatic so I would probably do something with that but without doing music I think I would be half as interesting as a person.
