Alibii are a musical duo who are pretty close to our hearts at Indie Top 39. We were blown away by their debut release ‘But I’, and mentioned that they had set high standards for themselves going forward. Then, along came ‘Just Another Minute’, the band’s brand new release, and I think it’s fair to say that they’ve met those standards and then some! It’s always a daunting task to follow up on such a well-received debut, but the pair find a beautiful middle-ground between electro-pop and indie-rock goodness.
‘Just Another Minute’ also marks the introduction of Will Cumberlege’s vocals and, together with Courtney’s, adds another layer of etherealness to the already dreamy, synthy tune. Working alongside producer and mixer Adrian Breakspear (Gang of Youths, Clews, Johnny Hunter), ‘Just Another Minute’ is further proof that Alibii are ready to go places musically. We’re so excited to join them on the journey!
‘Just Another Minute’ showcases the absurd talent that is Alibii. What a track and what a duo!
INDIE TOP 39
What does the song mean to you?
‘Just Another Minute’ has been a bit of a rollercoaster for us, as it had to follow our debut single ‘But I’.
‘But I’ had more of a ballad/ electronic feel, whereas ‘Just Another Minute’ speaks more to our love for Indi pop/rock. Also, it was the first time Will (the other member of the project) was introduced as one of the main vocalists on the track. We were really changing things up, but still wanted it to feel like it was created by the same people who wrote ‘But I’. We went through many rewrites of the song trying to perfect the product (which you can never do). So after a year, we knew it was about time to release it and hope it resonates with listeners.
What are your favourite lyrics in the song?
“Did you say fake” The entry to the second verse is where you get to experience the other perspective in the song. This opening line shows the misunderstanding between the two, delivering the message early that they don’t hear each other and realise they’re both still in love. I guess it just feels like a simple line that carried so much meaning in the song.
What would your life be like without music?
Life without music would be devastating for so many reasons! Number one – unemployment, and number two – you can’t blast a podcast at a party!
What do you want to achieve in the next 12 months with your music?
There are quite a few goals that we would love to achieve. With our live band, the dream would be to do an Australian tour (to support a larger band) or even play an Australian festival! Also, on the other side of things, release at least two/three more songs, including Adrian Breakspear who has helped us so much through the last two releases.
