Shani Rose and Chelsea Davis make up the quirky and colourful indie-pop duo named Roseport, and last month they released an upbeat, feel-good cracker in the form of ‘Hellos and Goodbyes’. It’s a song about embracing the present, no matter how messy, complicated, or “out of our hands,” it is. “Hellos and goodbyes, remind us we’re alive…we’re alive.” Now, we at Indie Top 39 have a small confession to make. Sometime in 2020, we discovered a band called JØAN, and fell in love with their music. ‘Lights in the Shadows’, in particular, rocked our world so much that we named it our song of the year for 2021. You might be asking – why are we mentioning this? Well…JØAN and Roseport feature the same duo! They’re a duo within a duo! We think that’s pretty special and unique, and can’t wait to hear what both projects come up with next!
‘Hellos and Goodbyes’ is the optimistic, upbeat, and feel-good tune that you need in your life right now!
INDIE TOP 39
What does the song mean to you?
We, like most artists, are trying to make sense of a not-quite-post-pandemic world. Every plan we’ve had in the last two years has been canceled, delayed, changed, or interrupted by forces beyond our control. Nothing looks the “way we thought it would.” Shani gave birth to her first baby in the middle of a global pandemic, and he was introduced to the world on Zoom. Chelsea has bounced between three states, moving through a break-up, a lost job, a new job, and a new relationship. We’re both learning to lean into discomfort, let go, and embrace the messy and beautiful life we have, even though it’s not what we pictured. We wanted to put out a song about a fresh start, however tenuous. An inspiring, feel good anthem for 2022, a New Year many people felt (understandably) tentative about celebrating. We wanted to celebrate the lessons we’re learning through the pandemic. ‘Hellos and Goodbyes’ is about embracing the gift of the “now”, however messy and beautiful it shows up.
What do you hope to achieve with this song?
We hope this song inspires people to celebrate the moment! It’s got the feel of a good roadtrip, so we hope people jump in the car, take a long drive, take deep breaths, and enjoy the ride.
Which Netflix series or movie would you like your music to be featured in?
Well, it’s not Netflix, but we think it would go well in Ted Lasso on Apple TV! He’s the ultimate upbeat human, and (Season 2 spoiler alert) he learns to hold the tension of hope while he’s in pain. There are a lot of ‘hellos and goodbyes’ in that show – relationships ending and starting as people grow and change.
What are your favourite lyrics in the song?
“Did you notice that we really don’t know where we’re going? Hit or miss, is there ever any way of knowing…hellos and goodbyes remind us we’re alive”
