This week, we were treated to many more incredible new singles. Some of these singles really executed a minimal style expertly, while others favoured a more full and atmospheric experience.
Here are 9 tracks that we utterly loved, and each of them does a very good job at being incredibly engaging, whether that be to a subtle of layered sound.
Chocolate Mtn. » Bloom
With the springtime rapidly warming the weather up, it was definitely nice to come across a track with such a brilliantly spring-like feel. It’s vast and colourful in its sound and reminds us of the great wide open. This would be a perfect chill-out track to accompany you indoors or out.
Francesca Blanchard » Did It to Myself
Francesca Blanchard’s ‘Did It to Myself’ is the type of track that really utilises a quiet sound to its advantage so well. Blanchard uses this subtle sound to convey the melancholy emotion that laces this track ever so beautifully. We also loved the melodies on the choruses especially, which only further this highly sombre mood.
Jasmine Jethwa » Hurricane
The leading track of Jasmine Jethwa’s debut EP of the same name is a masterfully progressive one. The steady rhythm that this song keeps, really helps the song blossom into the gorgeously bursting melody it eventually becomes. We also adore the vocal harmonies, that really tugs at the heartstrings with the epic emotion they convey.
Josa Barck » The Future
The title of this song seems like no coincidence at all; Josa Barck takes the idea that a lot of indie bands are pursuing, in which they are establishing a more 80’s inspired electronic sound. However, this song advances a step further in this style, by sounding even closer to a retro, almost prince-era like sound. It’s probably the funkiest thing we’ve heard all week, and we can’t wait to have it on blast in the summer sun.
LIE NING » tonight
The sound that serves as the foundation for LIE NING’s “tonight” is very dark, but beautifully so; indeed a nocturnal mood that really does the title a great justice. Pairing with LIE NING’s own, very soulful vocals, we could almost visualise the night with the help of this amazingly soothing single.
L’Imperatrice » Fou
The quirky charm of this track seemed apparent to us from the very moment we first heard it. With the minimal, yet incredibly effective electronic sound conveying an almost pistils-like colourfulness, it’s catchiness was near-instantaneous.
M3ON & Abi Flynn » Strange Vibes
This collaboration between M3ON and Abi Flynn resulted in an excellent combination of electronic and jazzy sounds respectively. But furthering from that, this track masterfully creates the sense of wonder, almost like a mirage of sound. The simultaneous indulgence and otherworldliness that this song carries make it a strange vibe indeed, but one that we can’t get enough of.
Maya Law » Tired
With her first single to be released in 2020, Maya Law brings us a vocal attitude with the same level of intimacy that one would expect from a live show. The straight-forward and highly acoustic sound of this single only boosts this intimacy further. Comparing this track to her 2016 album ‘Her or Him’, we can definitely notice a more realised style. Be sure to look out for an interview we have planned with this wonderful artist very soon.
Ren » Life Is Funny
Ren brings us a straight-forward and to the point bop with ‘Life Is Funny’ with some pretty masterful and fast-paced lyrics, that does indeed feel reminiscent to the likes of Plan-B or Professor Green. The song is a very accurate and fitting track given the strange times we are all currently facing.
We have picked only nine songs that stood out this week, however below you can find the playlist that features 39 songs.
