While this Sunday might be a day for people to twiddle their thumbs, waiting for the news on an “easing” of lockdown here in the UK, we wanted to give you guys something else to take your mind off it; and what we seem to be best at providing, is of course brand new music.
This week we see new material from artists whose music we adored in 2019, along with a few newer artists. Without further ado, let’s jump right in.
Kalyja Rain » Gold Teeth
After Kalyja Rain’s “Mile High” was named as our best song of 2019 (as well as also topping our charts two times last year), we were thrilled to receive another great tune in 2020. “Gold Teeth” offers more of a stripped back production than the like of “Mile High”, but certainly didn’t fail to pull us in to its chilled and relaxing sound. We also love the choppy and steady rhythm of this track, and feel that the overall aesthetic of this new single shows us just how musically versatile this artist is.
Daiva » Mesh
On her very first single, Lithuanian artist Daiva wows us with her punchy flows and the smooth, ambient electronic production behind “Mesh”. The whole track generally feels very atmospheric thanks to the echoing melodies that lace this track. Needless to say that “Mesh” is a brilliant debut single, and we can’t wait to hear more from Daiva.
Harry Stange » Turn Away
After topping our chart twice in 2019, were were certainly looking forward to what Harry Strange had in store for us this year. “Turn Away” is the second single that Harry Strange has released in 2020, and seems to be pointing towards a brand new EP or album cycle. While his previous release “Four In the Morning”, has already worked its way towards currently being the second most popular of his releases on Spotify, we feel that “Turn Away”is not long away from following suit. This new track has both a brilliantly dreamy melody, and an equally upbeat rhythm to “Four In The Morning.”
LIE NING » wandering romance
We enjoyed LIE NING’s debut single “tonight” enough to feature it on one of our previous New Music Sunday articles and playlist on the weekend of its release. Fast-forward to this week, and we now have the sophomore track from this incredibly talented artist. Much like “tonight”, his new track “wandering romance” has been release with both a standard and acoustic version to pick from. We absolutely love this track for its powerfully soulful aesthetic, along with another helping of LIE NING’s gorgeous vocals.
Monteagle » Total Energy
From his brand new EP A Colourful Moth, which we had discovered recently. While we noticed that there were a small handful of tracks that were already teased, like “Tan” and “In Reality”, we were captivated by this freshly released track, titled “Total Energy”. In the context of the EP, “Total Energy” serves as a sister song to the EP’s closing song “Total Energy II”. But the one we have chosen is immensely atmospheric, and very spiritual in its sound. It effortlessly got us completely immersed.
Morgan Harper Jones » Typical
The third single released from songwriter and storyteller Morgan Harper Jones; “Typical” absolutely excels in carrying the melancholic sound aesthetic that she had shown to really home in on with her previous two tracks. We absolutely love the musical depth of this third single, and feel that it helps to intertwine both the beautiful and sad moods that serve as the foundations for “Typical”. An absolutely gorgeous track, and one that has certainly not failed to tug at the heart strings.
Oktoba & Laura Greaves » What The World Needs Now
Alt folk singer Chris Athorne’s project Oktoba and singer-songwriter Laura Greaves, come together on “What The World Needs Now”; a truly epic and beautifully uplifting new track. The combination of vocals, along with the set of strings used make this track a truly serene experience, and we indulged in every second of it.
roves & Grace Eden » She
Another awesome collaboration that we got to see this week was between indie band roves, and Grace Eden, who makes her musical debut on “She”. Eden’s vocals blend very well with roves’ signature reverberated sound, and this all comes together to create a highly indulgent tune, one that we enjoyed listening to thoroughly.
Sofia Dragt » Old Boat
While Sofia Dragt currently already has a place in our chart as a member of the duo Luminar, this week has seen the singer / songwriter / composer release a brand new solo single named “Old Boat”. this track has a very vast and indulgent sound to it that we can’t seem to get enough of. Different layers are added to the track as it continues to allow for an awesome sense of progression, and the piano melody ties all of the other elements together gorgeously.
We have picked only nine songs that stood out this week, however below you can find the playlist that features 39 songs. Do you agree with our pics? Let us know on our socials.
