This month has seemingly flown by, but with it, we have had one final week of music to look forward to before we venture off into June.
This week especially, we’ve had a wide range of warm and summery tunes to dive into. Here are 9 that we thought wowed us the most.
James Walker » The Conversation
The single of the week is the latest from the immensely talented James Walker. We feel that James has really brought us some stellar releases in the year 2020 so far. However, ‘The Conversation’ may just be one of his proudest moments. With a chilling piano melody and a good dosage of reverb, this tune sets itself up to be an incredibly intimate and heartfelt experience throughout. The progression that this track builds elevates James Walker’s vocals to a whole new level of power.
Bryde » The Volume of Things
We have definitely enjoyed what Bryde has put out this year to tease her brand new sophomore album The Volume of Things. We were thrilled that this week album was finally released, along with a wide array of brand new listens on top of her generous offering of teasers beforehand. Of all of the new tracks, we feel that the album’s title track was one of the most notable for really grabbing our attention. With its echoing, spring-like sound, and awesome sense of progression, this track really grabbed our hearts with its gorgeous melody.
Darragh Chaplin & FAVELA » Closer
With his newest track, Darragh Chaplin teams up with multi-instrumentalist and producer FAVELA on ‘Closer’. We love the sleek and tight pop sound that carries enough ambience to really let Chaplin’s vocals shine through. But ultimately, both elements, along with both artists, really elevate each other greatly in what is quite frankly a beautiful track.
Flõstate » Time
Time is the debut single from self-proclaimed “fantasy R&B duo from space” Flõstate. Given that this is their very first single to be released, it’s safe to say we are very impressed. Flõstate live up to their spacey aesthetic with the immense musical depth carried on ‘Time’, and we love the blend of piano and echoing guitar licks. ‘Time’ is for certain one of those tracks that listeners will easily drift through indulgently, and it’s a perfect tune for any chilled summer playlist, as well as a phenomenal debut.
Foe Gotten » Girlfriend
After how much we had enjoyed the debut single from Foe Gotten, titled ‘I Stole Your Shoes’, we were excited to hear what else the dynamic duo had in store. This week, we were finally able to listen to their sophomore single ‘Girlfriend’. We feel that this new song takes more of a punchy and soulful approach to their pop sound. This makes for just as much of an engaging listen as their debut single, if not more so.
New Luna » Prunus
With their first track of 2020 thus far, indie rock band New Luna pushes their raw yet atmospheric sound further with ‘Prunus’. In the case of this track, New Luna has really ramped the nostalgia level up with the increased sense of said rawness and gives this track a very “close to home” sound. We love the bittersweet atmosphere that this track creates too, and we all found it to be a remarkably engaging tune.
Tahn Solo » Joyride
And here, we have another debut track to cover, that being Tahn Solo’s ‘Joyride’. Much like the incredibly indulgent and cosmic nature of the other debut track, we covered, ‘Joyride’ carries a similarly awesome atmosphere. The sheer warmth and whimsicality of this track’s production clicked with us straight away and helps this track to be irresistibly smooth, along with Tahn Solo’s own echoing vocals.
Topher Holland & Nii » Telephone
‘Telephone’ is the first bit of music from Topher Holland since his last album Hold your Horses way back in 2018. But with his musical return, he has brought company with him. By collaborating with Leeds based singer-songwriter and guitarist Nii, ‘Telephone’ manages to carry a much more contemporary and accessible sound, while retaining those American flavours that Topher Holland has mastered over the course of his career.
Willow Robinson » Beyond the Storm
Willow Robinson has taken an admirably unique approach towards releasing music. Earlier this year, he had released a three-track EP, titled Winter. Fast-forward to this week, and we have a brand new EP. Following on from Winter by donning the title Spring, this EP brings us yet another three tracks. Of all of those tracks to pick from, we ultimately went for the EP’s second track ‘Beyond the Storm’, as it is clearly the EP’s most dynamic inclusion. ‘Beyond the Storm’ is a swirling vortex of sound that completely surrounds the listener in all its musical glory.
We have picked only nine songs that stood out this week, however below you can find the playlist that features 39 songs. Do you agree with our pics? Let us know on our socials.
