This week sees us now at the height of April, and with that, we have been fortunate enough to receive a fantastic batch of brand new singles from independent artists.
This week’s playlist sees a brilliant balance of new faces and returning favourites, and we wanted to display this through our top 9 picks. So without further ado, let’s jump straight into this week’s New Music Sunday.
Track of the Week
Tom Tom Park » Revelation
Tom Tom Park’s debut single brings a highly energetic and astral atmosphere, making it extremely fun to listen to.
INDIE TOP 39
The first single release from Dutch producer Tom Tom Park, ‘Revelation’ is truly celebrated as a debut effort. With an acoustic cover, as well as a remix from Xander Milne to accompany, listeners are treated to multiple variations of the single. However, we would still deem the original single as the most luminous and exciting. The energetic and almost astral atmosphere that ‘Revelation’ brings to the table, allows the single to be extremely fun to listen to. It’s that kind of mood that has us pumped for better days, where we can begin appreciating life at its fullest with the ones we love. ‘Revelation’ serves as a delightful debut from the producer, and we cannot wait to see how he will keep the colourful vibes coming.
Dom Malin » Drama
Malin not only continues to champion his intimate and sound through ‘Drama’, but manages to also add a catchy energy as well.
indie top 39
After kicking off his discography last year, with his debut single ‘Hold on Me’, midlands-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Dom Malin released four following singles in that same year. We thoroughly loved how Dom managed to create such deep and intimate moods with such a stripped-back sound, particularly with tracks like ‘Eye of the Storm’. But with Dom’s first single release of 2021, titled ‘Drama’, Malin not only achieves this same effect, but also manages to create an incredibly emotive energy through its catchy rhythm, and its tongue-in-cheek songwriting. Being the newest single to tease Dom Malin’s forthcoming EP, ‘Drama’ serves as an exciting sign of things to come in this artist’s musical 2021.
Beau Bolden » Unfold
With its slow-burning pace, and vast, atmospheric soundscape, ‘Unfold’ is both a musically and contextually deep track.
INDIE TOP 39
West Sussex solo artist Beau Bolden arrives with his first single release of 2021, which also stands as his fourth solo effort. ‘Unfold’ is a ballad that lyrically reflects the idea of feeling powerless towards accepting a feeling that you cannot change, regardless of how, deep down, you know it would never benefit you. It’s a pretty deep and introspective subject, that is tackled beautifully through ‘Unfold’. With its slow-burning pace, and vast, atmospheric soundscape, the subject matter of ‘Unfold’ is reflected well musically too. It truly is that kind of track that soaks into the soul of the listener, with the incredible amount of both melodic and contextual depth and immersion that ‘Unfold’ carries within.
DAME » Bite
Through ‘Bite’, DAME continues to champion their chemistry, and expand their discography with this unique anti-love anthem.
INDIE TOP 39
After bringing us their debut self-titled EP back in 2016, Birmingham-based indie pop band have been steadily working towards fleshing out their colourful and groovy style. However, with the release of their first 2021 single ‘Bite’, DAME continues to champion their chemistry, and keep the productive ball rolling. Serving as an aesthetically contrasting track to the introspective feel of their 2020 single ‘Cold Water’, ‘Bite’ is an anti-love anthem through and through. The luminously groovy melody of this track, paired with a highly danceable beat, it definitely feels safe to say that there is a highly empowering feel surrounding ‘Bite’. We would absolutely love to see where DAME will venture next.
Danny Randell » Don’t Come Back
‘Don’t Come Back’ leads the way for a string of new singles from Danny Randell, displaying a more refined and sleek aesthetic.
INDIE TOP 39
After Canadian folk artist Danny Randell made his first steps onto the scene, with a string of emotive acoustic ballads, and competing for various music awards, rallying fans from 2016 onward, the artist is seemingly using 2021 as a better opportunity than ever, to fully get the musical releases rolling. ‘Don’t Come Back’ is the first edition of the musical releases that Danny Randell has been working on, and definitely shows a more refined and sleek aesthetic, particularly in terms of production. With the rhythm carrying a lot of electronic inspiration, ‘Don’t Come Back’ is a brilliant example of Danny Randell settling into a folk-pop style, which is made all the more unique with Randell’s powerful and emotive vocals.
David Ost » Ants
‘Ants’ feels like a warm, upbeat, and whimsical means of diversifying David Ost’s discography even further.
INDIE TOP 39
We have thoroughly loved what folk singer-songwriter David Ost has dished-out, since kicking off his discography with the amazing debut single ‘Gamblers Of Romance’ in 2019. Particular with Ost fleshing-out his discography in 2020, we became very quick fans of the artist. With that being said, it should come as no surprise to find that we are thrilled to see David Ost release his first original single of 2021. Titled ‘Ants’, this new track feels like an incredibly unique and interesting means of diversifying David Ost’s discography, with a sound that is equal parts warm, upbeat, and whimsical. Describing a friendship broken down by depression, ‘Ants’ is as gorgeously introspective as it is sonically unique.
Faerie & VelviV » re: invite to the moon
‘Re: invite to the moon’ feels impossible not to fall in love with, thanks to its soothingly colourful and lo-fi vibe.
INDIE TOP 39
New York indie-pop artist Faerie has stood as one of those artists that has simply been on a roll in recent memory, in terms of being musically productive. After releasing her first collaborative album with wavcat last year, and then releasing an EP earlier in 2021, this week sees Faerie releasing her newest single. Serving as another collaborative effort, this time with electronic artist VelviV, ‘re: invite to the moon’ manages to carry an incredibly soothing and chilled lo-fi vibe. In musical terms, this track simply feels impossible to not fall in love with, especially with better chances to enjoy music outdoors on the horizon. ‘Re: invite to the moon’ absolutely oozes with warm and colourful charm.
Kalyja Rain » Think About Me
Kalyja rain implements her utterly charming aesthetic, into the more pop-inspired sound of ‘Think About Me’.
INDIE TOP 39
We have been very big fans of Kalyja Rain ever since the release of her 2019 single ‘Mile High’, the second song to be added to our Best Songs Of The Decade playlist. Kalyja only kept the ball rolling even faster in 2020, where the end of that year saw her release her debut EP, Taking Shapes. We are immensely excited to see the follow-up single to that EP arrive this week, in the form of ‘Think About Me’. This track sees a more pop-inspired musical direction from Kalyja Rain, implementing her utterly charming aesthetic into slightly more accessible territory, which is awesome to hear. Kalyja most certainly champions this newfound aesthetic, and we are very intrigued to see if this will be pursued in the near future.
LONGLIGHT » Choppy Water
The debut single from LONGLIGHT perfectly puts their soaring vocal harmonies and vast soundscape on full display.
INDIE TOP 39
‘Choppy Water’ is the debut single from London-based genre-bending duo LONGLIGHT. Consisting of musicians Jo Williams and Lucas Polo, the band are known and loved by fans for their vast soundscapes and euphorically soaring vocal harmonies. This is most certainly put on display through ‘Choppy Water’, a track that creates a gorgeously warm atmosphere through those qualities. It also manages to sound very straight-forward in terms of melodic structure, while carrying a great depth regarding all of the subtle musical elements it carries. As a result, ‘Choppy Water’ harnesses a soothing sense of familiarity, whilst also sounding enjoyably fresh with each and every listen.
