One of my favourite things about music is the community. Whether you’re at a concert or in a car ride, music plays a pivotal role in interacting with those around you. Not only is it a great icebreaker, but it gives a way to connect with strangers on an emotional level without having to get to know them. It’s not always easy to bond with people, let alone those you don’t know well. Music, however, makes it just a bit easier. Just some food for thought while you enjoy this weeks New Music Sunday!
Miakie » Resonating
Infectious bass lines meet ethereal synths and Miakie’s powerful vocals on her new release ‘Resonating’
INDIE TOP 39
Miakie’s new release, ‘Resonating’ drips cool. upbeat, intimate lyrics groove overtop a constantly evolving instrumental. The catchy chorus feels perfectly situated between the quizzical verses. Energy would push and pull like the flow of the tide, and even at its most intense everything was relaxed and comfortable. I simply loved the sound of the vocals and how they seemed to just float over the texture. Relentless drums keep everything pushing along, giving structure and freedom simultaneously. Awesome mixing allows every voice to be heard clear as day deepening the entrancing vibes. The attention to detail is evident and shows off Miakie’s prowess constantly throughout this chill, memorable song.

Alexa Perez » Wondering
‘Wondering’ is beautiful and delicate, an absolute delight to listen to.
INDIE TOP 39
The easy-going, beautiful vocals set the mood of ‘Wondering’ phenomenally. The lyrics were approachable and honest without feeling simple or pandering. They deepened the emotions while still feeling like they came from a close friend. The way the vocal layers would occasionally break into thick harmonies kept everything cool and the song pushed along. Every voice worked together to keep the steady increase of energy through the entirety. The almost jarring ending leaves the song sitting on your palette. Almost like when somebody starts a sentence and trails off; it left me curious and wanting more.

Alta Falls » The Fire
At points reminiscent of classic rock, ‘The Fire’ is innovative and exciting.
INDIE TOP 39
Fueled by airy guitars and light vocals, Alta Falls new release ‘The Fire’ is atmospheric, cool and groovy. Vocals drive the energy while the rhythm section sets the vibe. Moody and light, the texture is unique. Consistent vocals provide familiarity while the rhythm section molds the soundscape. Dreamy synths meet the band’s upbeat rock groove in a cool way thats nostalgic and new at the same time. Although ‘The Fire’ clocks in at just under four minutes it feels like a journey that both flys by and takes its time. But that’s enough contradicting myself – I loved how groovy and catchy this fun release was.

Davidly » Storm In The Hills
Dark, groovy, and intense – ‘Storm In The Hills’ is awesome
INDIE TOP 39
Relaxing, ethereal vibes greet you on ‘Storm In The Hills’, Portland-based singer/songwriter Davidly’s latest release. Synthesizers float along through the atmospheric instrumental, contrasting the trap-inspired rolling hi-hats. The lightness of everything is pushed along by the underlying intensity. Despite this, the easy-going vocals never leave their place of comfort. Instead of matching the intensity, they move over everything ethereally. When paired with modern mixing/production the texture is unique and hard to define. Sometimes leaning into the trap-pop vibes while at others an eclectic nimbleness that’s impossible to pinpoint. Everything came together phenomenally, resulting in this awesome song.

jelia » Each Time You Fall
Pushed along by beauty and intensity, ‘Each Time You Fall’ is unique and unforgettable
INDIE TOP 39
Powerful vocals complement the delicate piano lines. Whenever the energy picks up and the drums enter, the mood changes completely. Leaning into the beauty still, but easily matching the intensity of the relentless drums. Quick and versatile, they change and broaden the texture without distorting that underlying lightness the piano brings. Not only that, but they don’t distort the underlying light and comfortable vibe established in the beginning. Seamlessly transitioning from one mood to the next, the massively different energies would complement and contrast one another beautifully. Catchy, intense, pretty, and just cool all around – ‘Each Time You Fall’ is a great release.

Mat Hunsley » Rambling
Delicacy tints Mat Hunsley’s powerful vocals on ‘Rambling’
INDIE TOP 39
With choirs singing in the background, the texture on ‘Rambling’ is beautiful. From the powerful lead vocals to the relaxed vibey instrumental the song is full of highlights. Perhaps my favorite part, however, was the beauty and easy listening of it all. Hunsley commanded attention while still sounding graceful and relaxed. The way it paired with the light rhythm section was awesome. Layered vocals create delicate harmonies that drift in and out of the texture. Not only that, but a myriad of different voices would enter and leave seamlessly. From washed-out guitars to these warm harmonies, every voice worked together to create a sweet, colorful texture.

Ollie Twohill » Boots
Ollie Twohill delivers yet another phenomenally catchy anthem
INDIE TOP 39
Warm vocals greet you and set the tone on ‘Boots’, Australia based singer/songwriter Ollie Twohill’s latest release.. Vocals are personable, and move conversationally over the adaptive instrumental. Although the vocals provide energy, they have no problem handing off the spotlight. Occasionally opting to let the rhythm section have a moment to shine via solo or a quick couple measure fill. It allowed each voice to feel vital to the groove and didn’t let any melody get stale. A fun and exciting song to listen to, and bound to make your day a little better.
