LA LUNE (real name Oliva Judd) is a singer-songwriter from Brighton who just released new single “Grape Soda” accompanied by a stunner of a music video.
LA LUNE admitted she felt directionless as she’d use to go for a very minimal and downtempo vibe. Even though she still employs a lot of these elements in her music, at the moment her sound is changing as she is feeling bolder. LA LUNE is no longer scared of trying new things!
With the music I?m making now, it feels a lot more defined and sure of itself, and braver.

Tell us about the inspiration behind “Grape Soda”
Quite a lot of random things inspired ?grape soda?. I think I had the title first. When I was about 10 years old, I was obsessed with the Disney film, ?UP?. That Christmas, my Dad gave me a pin badge which was the grape soda bottle cap, just like in the film. It?s still my favourite present I?ve ever received, and it just holds so much sentimental value. Because of this, my friend said to me that I should write a song called grape soda, so I did. The song itself has no relation to the story behind the badge, though.
I wrote the song about feelings of love and self-destruction, and how sometimes they?re the same thing.
How did it all come together?
I began with the title, which I don?t think I?ve ever done before and then came up with the chord sequence, as it?s definitely a prominent foundation for the song. Then the lyrics just flowed, really. It felt like a very easy and natural process. And I knew I wanted to keep the production more minimal – I like that the beat is really linear throughout the track. I think the lyrics are more the focus of this particular song.
Tell us about the concept behind the video
Ah, the video! A friend of mine called Eva is a fashion student and graphic designer. She used to make little illustrations and gifs of me from pictures from gigs I?d played. It was the white lines on the black background. I don?t really remember how I made the decision, but I just messaged Eva one day asking if she?d be up for making an illustrated video for my next song? I?d scribbled down a bunch of ideas on the tube on my way to meet her. We met up for coffee in London and mapped out the whole video. She totally got what I envisioned, and I?m so happy with the result! It?s incredible because she had to draw each individual frame, and there are thousands of frames in the video. It?s mental. She?s so talented and worked really hard, and it shows.
What is the biggest challenge for you being an independent artist?
I think just being able to keep going is sometimes the hardest part! It?s so easy to get myself into this weird bubble, clouded by a negative mindset, feeling like you?re not going anywhere. A lot of the time it can feel like a bit of an uphill struggle, and it?s easy to feel lost. But then you get your little breaks and something really great happens, and it?s really rewarding because you can truly feel as though you?ve earned it.
What can we expect from you in 2019?
Well, I can?t reveal too much right now, but let?s just say there?s a lot more new music coming very soon.
