Let’s round off the week with something a little nostalgic and, frankly, downright charming shall we? ’90’s Darling’ is the brand new release from Vancouver-based singer/songwriter and drag artist David Cutting, who performs under the moniker of Dust Cwaine. Serving as the lead single from their upcoming LP entitled Arcana, ’90’s Darling’ is a trip down memory lane in musical form. “The taste of pop rocks on our school yard kiss, Tamagotchi graveyard covered with thick mist”.
Working alongside producer Josh Eastman, the pair have created something rather special. They’ve crafted a tune that somehow sounds familiar and completely fresh all at the same time. You kind of just have to hear it for yourself! We at Indie Top 39 feel certain that you’ll be walking around singing “Be kind, rewind” in your head for days on end after just a few listens to this song. We know that we have!

What does the song mean to you?
This song to me signifies looking at the past with joy. Exploring the parts of our upbringings that create nostalgia. There are moments too immeasurable to count that strip away our innocence, and with that in mind, I wanted to cement everything before that like a time capsule for my inner child.
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be.
I knew that I wanted to create a song to capture the joyful moments of my childhood. I think a lot of folks growing up in the 90’s share a lot of similar memories because the world moved slower and there was so much less STUFF, that we all just sorta floated around trends.
I brought the fully formed lyrics to my producer Josh Eastman and they helped create the first demo. Which then sat on ice for a while. When we picked it back up it was very clear that we wanted this late nighties vibe so Josh sped it up and crafted such a beautiful guitar piece. In the end, we got this beautifully crafted song that feels like you heard it on the radio in the 90s.
What inspired you to share the song with the world?
Social obligation! HAHA! I kid! I have been doing drag for 6 years and music is a huge part of that for me. I see this as an evolution. My drag peers the world over don’t make music that I like, so I decided that I would do it myself. I’m really grateful for my producer Josh because they really get it. I fight for an authentic and real sound and lyrics that are self-referential on a personal deeper level. I grew up quite poor in the 90s and when we had fun it was always just silly because we had our imaginations and I don’t think I lost that!
Which Netflix series or movie would you like your music to be featured in?
OH MY GOD. Put me in anything A24 or Our Flag Means Death oh oh! Or Snowflake Mountain Season 2! Ha!
