It’s true… we don’t feature a lot of punk-rock at Indie Top 39. But when we first heard ‘I Hate It Here’, courtesy of Boston-based five-piece Indoor Friends, we just knew that we had to get the word out! It’s the band’s debut single, and it’s a foot-stomping and high-energy anthem that’s a little gritty, a little raw, but undeniably catchy and bold. An angsty and potent tune, ‘I Hate It Here’ expresses the ultimate disappointment with the human race and the choices that individuals make. “When I was young, the world was full of light,” sings Amanda Bysheim. “Guess I was wrong, it’s really full of spite.”
Indoor Friends formed from a punk-rock cover group that played a lot of Green Day, Good Charlotte, and Bowling for Soup, and the band doesn’t mind mentioning that the “nostalgic punk sound was definitely on our minds when we were writing this one.”
High-energy, forceful, and in-your-face, ‘I Hate It Here’ is a punk-rock anthem for the ages!

What does the song mean to you?
As the first song we wrote together as a group this song means a lot to us. It’s an angsty anthem to blast when it feels like life is getting in all the punches. Hopefully other people can relate to that feeling and this song can help let off some steam. It is absolutely worth it to blast it in the car when you’ve had a frustrating day.
Who do you hope the song resonates with the most?
Those who feel overwhelmed, either at the state of the world or their own personal lives, or both! From impacts of a global pandemic and rising levels of depression and anxiety, it’s easy to feel depleted. We hope this song helps to validate those feelings and give people a chance to express them in a fun, angsty way.
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be?
This is the first song that we wrote together as a band. Our guitarist wrote the main riff and brought it to the group during one of our first band practices. As we were trying to come up with words, our drummer wrote what ended up being a portion of the chorus melody. Once we had the “I hate it here” theme our lead singer ran with it.
Amanda: Writing the lyrics, I was going through a lot of emotional turmoil and trauma in my life. I was always depressed or having panic attacks, and the only things that kept my head above water were not healthy coping methods. I had come to a point where my emotions were boiling on the surface and no coping skills seems to help. So, I turned to music.
What are your favourite lyrics in the song?
“How do I mesh my old self with the new, I used to be fearless now I’m split in two.” The idea of meshing the person you are with the person you hoped you would become when you were younger can be hard to navigate.
