‘Glance’ is the incredibly moving debut single from The Unbeat Soul, the musical project of London-based singer/songwriter and producer Stephen Langstaff. A delicate, rich, and honest piano ballad, ‘Glance’ is the first tune from Langstaff’s upcoming project, a project that he says came about “during the first lockdown when the world was feeling vulnerable and so was I.” Langstaff’s vocal performance deserves a special shout-out, as the skilful musician warmly invites you into his world with a comforting and soothing tone.
Drawing on influence from the likes of Sam Cooke and 70’s singer/songwriters like Neil Young to create his unique and incomparable soundscape, The Unbeat Soul brings an authentic and sincere quality to his music that we at Indie Top 39 haven’t heard in a while. We can’t wait to hear what Langstaff has in store for us next, and if it’s anything as good as ‘Glance’, we’re all in for a treat!
Yet another debut release that has completely blown us away this year! ‘Glance’ is moving, soulful, and downright genius!
INDIE TOP 39
What does the song mean to you?
‘Glance’ is about vulnerability. It’s trying to let someone know how much you need them for support without being a drama queen about it. The little things in life mean the most, don’t they? So saying “If you think I don’t need you, take another glance” summed it up for me.
Who do you hope the song resonates with the most?
Anyone who likes it and might need it.
What does success mean to you?
I always go back to that Bob Dylan quote: “A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night, and in between he does what he wants to do.”
What would your life be like without music?
I’d probably be a painter or a screenwriter.
