‘Shade of Blue’ is the debut release from New Jersey-based singer/songwriter Ashley Diana, and we at Indie Top 39 have had the tune spinning on repeat ever since it first came out! It’s one of those genre-blending tracks that we just absolutely love – rocky, bluesy, soulful, anthemic, brilliant. Working alongside friend and producer Eric Shwartz, the pair have created a unique and eclectic song that has us rather excited for what next Ashley Diana has up her musical sleeve.
Describing ‘Shade of Blue’ as “a song that represents the loss of a love”, Diana proves herself a more than capable storyteller and lyricist. “There once was me and you, I know you felt it too,” she sings. “But being without you, showed a whole new shade of blue.” Drawing on a range of influences – Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and Janis Joplin to name just a few – the future is certainly bright for this talented songstress.
With a debut release that is this good, this fresh, and this eclectic, we simply can’t wait to hear what Ashley Diana gets up to next!

What does the song mean to you?
‘Shade of Blue’ means so much to me. This song was the first song I was confident enough to share with the world. I wrote ‘Shade of Blue’ during a really sad time in my life. I was able to take my pain and sadness and turn it into art, and that’s all I ever wanted.
What would your life be like without music?
My life would feel so empty without music. I’ve been writing for a long time, and singing for an even longer time. Music has always been my outlet. There’s a song for every feeling that you experiencing in life, and that’s so important. I’ve gained so many amazing relationships in my life because of music.
What do you want to achieve in the next 12 months with your music?
Within the next 12 months I hope that my music reaches people all around the world. My friends Eric Shwartz (my producer/insanely talented musician) and Ray Laux (another insanely talented musician) have helped me create the music I’m putting out and I’m so grateful for them! Can’t wait to share the rest of what we are creating with you all!
Please finish the sentence – Music to me is…
Therapy – a form of release for myself. I mentioned before that I’m able to take my pain and sadness and turn it into art. I think it’s truly a beautiful thing. I hope that people listen to my music and feel the emotions that I feel. I want people to know that even in the darkest moments you’re not alone. You just have to find your outlet, and music is my outlet!
