JØAN are a pretty special duo to Indie Top 39. We’ve been following their career since the very beginning (2017), and their tune ‘Lights in the Shadows’ was named as our song of the year in 2020. Now, the badass, superhero alter ego of the quirky and colourful indie-pop duo Roseport has returned, with ‘Dark Side’ serving as the perfect example of just what JØAN are all about!
Dark, atmospheric pop dripping with deep synths, electro-orchestral elements, and the haunting vocals of Shani Rose and Chelsea Davis. It’s truly remarkable that this is the same duo from Roseport. Their range, versatility, and adaptability are unlike any I’ve heard before. ‘Dark Side’ speaks to the shadows of ourselves that we don’t share with anyone. JØAN is sending out a message that, whilst this instinct to conceal is common, it’s this very instinct that has the ability to connect us as well.

What does the song mean to you?
‘Dark Side’ represents the voices in our minds that we don’t let anyone hear, the side of us we’re scared to show. Our shadow self. We are all flawed, even the strongest of us. We all have our dark side. JØAN is our badass, empowered alter ego, but like all heroes she has a dark, lonely side. We were inspired to write this by our favorite broken heroes, Jessica Jones and Batwoman, who push people away because they think they have to face everything alone.
What do you hope to achieve with this song?
The song is about the instinct to isolate instead of reaching out when we’re in pain, which we think a lot of people can relate to. We hope people connect with this song and know they’re not alone in having something to hide. We’re all human, all flawed, and so our sadness can actually connect us emotionally if we let it.

Jessica Jones, Batwoman, anything with Vampires, Loki, Black Widow, or Dark Phoenix!
What are your favourite lyrics in the song?
