Mari » Rocky Mountain
Intense, energetic, and beautiful – ‘Rocky Mountain’ will stay stuck in your head all day.
INDIE TOP 39
Driven by floor-shattering bass synths, Mari’s newest release ‘Rocky Mountain’ is awesome. The groovy instrumental morphs and evolves while easy-going vocals rest over top. Akin to artists like Grimes or Allie X, the sound was familiar yet unique and distinctive. What kept me coming back to listen again and again was the drastically different moods Mari captured. Sometimes break-neck drums lead the sound, while at others it’s the atmospheric pop vocals. No matter what voice was at the forefront of the texture, nothing ever felt out of place or needlessly complicated. Instead, the versatile sound would complement and contrast the delicate mood set by the vocals.

Couvo » Tired
Powerful, groovy, and introspective – ‘Tired’ rocks!
INDIE TOP 39
Clocking in at just under 7 minutes, Couvo’s latest release ‘Tired’ consists of three songs. ‘Tired’, the first song and title track, manages to tell a story and entertain without feeling long. Different voices fade in and out of the texture, contributing what they need then allowing the personable vocals to lead the energy. What really impressed me, however, was how honest and artistic everything managed to be. Vocals felt like they were delivered from a close friend venting while the instrumental focused on twisting and enhancing the energy around it. At no point does the band get caught up in making the message easily digestible or trying to produce the next number one single. Instead, they stuck to their groove and produced this amazing and down to Earth track. Kudos.

Darinka » How’s The View
For a debut single, ‘How’s The View’ sounds mature, detailed and refined
INDIE TOP 39
‘How’s The View’ is the debut single by US-based alt-pop artist Darinka. Commanding vocals dance overtop an instrumental that brings out every last detail of the song. Brutally honest lyrics take jabs at the many issues in our society today without losing their relaxed energy. Whenever the chorus came around, all the different elements seemed to lock together and allow the song’s message to soar. I loved how easily the catchy pop-vibes and the sarcastic, frustrated lyricism tied together. Contrasted by the effervescent instrumental, I found myself engaged for the whole ~2 and a half minutes. An excellent song that will leave you craving more.

‘Lake Annency’ is a collaboration between West Sussex-based producer Fearn and the London-based singer Lorphe. Delicate vocals float easily along while the versatile instrumental sets the mood. Featuring a plethora of different colourful sounds and instruments, the song was encaptivating. Whether supported by strings and percussion or gentle piano and trumpet, the lead melody cut through the texture and brought out the beauty of everything around it. Despite this, every voice felt important and necessary to the tone. ‘Lake Annency’ is the type of song that puts a smile on your face, and sounds like what a hug feels like. A wonderful release that gets better every repetition.

Ralphy » Confess Unplugged
Defined by its warmth and honesty, ‘Confess Unplugged’ is lovely
INDIE TOP 39
Gentle strings provide all the structure and warmth ralphy, the LA-based singer/songwriter, needs for ‘Confess Unplugged’ to shine. Deeply emotional lyricism complements the easy-going instrumental and sets the song’s melancholy tone. Passionate delivery gives the vocals a huge presence that is contrasted by the relaxed guitar lines. Although the texture never thickens beyond the two voices, it sounds rich, full, and colorful. Capturing the complex emotions that come besides love sounds easy for ralphy. The lyrics were gorgeous, and easy enough to remember that I could join in for the song’s final chorus. A truly memorable release that will have you stuck in your feelings.

Seaker » Shadow
Rich harmonies cause ‘Shadow’ to ring out endlessly
INDIE TOP 39
Beautiful and elegant, ‘Shadow’ is the latest release from the United Kingdom-based singer/songwriter Seaker. Dense vocal harmonies pair with delicate piano lines easily, creating an atmosphere that’s as powerful as it is gorgeous. The way these colorful harmonies blended into the lead melody was unparalleled and unforgettable. Recorded in Seaker’s living room, there’s this intimate and vulnerable feel that drives the song’s relaxed energy. Not only that, but it mimic’s the chaos that clouds your mind sometimes. Sometimes the vocals blend together seamlessly, other times they would do their own thing – thickening and deepening the song’s already lovely texture.
