Los Angeles-based indie-folk act, Jason Rueger and the Eyes, recently released their brand new single ‘Fault Line’, and it’s an absolutely beautiful tune in every sense of the word. From the delicate piano to the soft, airy drums, all the instrumentals provide the perfect vehicle for Rueger’s hushed, almost whispery vocals. His performance immediately brings to mind one of my all-time favourite singer/songwriters, Elliott Smith, and it would be hard to believe that Rueger wasn’t in some way influenced by the late musician. The track serves as the follow-up to the band’s previous release ‘Two Ships’, and both songs will form part of their brand new album scheduled for release next month. Described by the band as a “psychedelic folk daydream about searching the unknown and standing in one place,” we at Indie Top 39 have fallen pretty hard for ‘Fault Line’ and get the feeling you will too!
‘Fault Line’ is a rather special tune. With each listen, you pick up more and more of its intricacies and overall beauty.

What does the song mean to you?
‘Fault Line’ is about the tension between forward motion and familiarity.
Tell us about your creative process and how the song came to be?
Jason’s vocals and acoustic guitar were recorded at home late at night – hushed so as not to wake anyone sleeping, which in turn informed the relaxed vibe that the song was built around.
What do you want to achieve in the next 12 months with your music?
The band’s new album, ‘Dowsing the Desert,’ releases on February 18th. With this sophomore album, the band mine deeper into a laidback and airy west coast sound. Yet this isn’t your typical drive-along-highway one; focus the lens outward toward the horizon, and you’ll find a palm tree alone on the open prairie, bending toward the sun in the bardo of twilight. It’s here Rueger looks inward, searching for the deeper meaning of life and relationship.
